PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware field hockey team put its post-season chances in jeopardy Friday afternoon as the Blue Hens dropped a 2-1 decision to host Drexel in its Colonial Athletic Association regular season finale.
The Blue Hens (6-11, 3-5 CAA), who dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 0-7 in road games this season, got a goal from Tori Karsten (at right) with just 1:06 left to play, but it wasn’t enough as Delaware fell to the Dragons for the first time since 1992 after 12 straight wins in the series.
Drexel, which got goals from Jennifer Bolger and Cassandra Prentiss, snapped a 10-game losing streak with its first win since Sept. 15. The Dragons, who close out the season Sunday vs. Towson, improved to 7-11 (1-6 CAA).
The game closed out Delaware’s 2006 CAA slate. In order for the Blue Hens to gain one of the six spots in the upcoming CAA Tournament, they must have one more league win than Towson (2-4) and the same amount of wins as William & Mary (3-3), Hofstra (3-3), and Virginia Commonwealth (2-5). Towson, William & Mary, and Hofstra each have two games remaining, including contests Friday night, while VCU has one game remaining. Delaware will close out the regular season Sunday at home against LaSalle.
Drexel opened the scoring just six minutes and 32 seconds into the contest when Bolger took a feed from Emily Horvat and scored past Delaware goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades (five saves) for a 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored again until the final minutes. The Dragons upped their lead to 2-0 with 1:28 left to play when Catherine Chiara assisted on a goal by Prentiss, but the Hens came right back just 22 seconds later to get on the board as Karsten scored her third goal of the season off a deflection. Freshman Rachel Schexnayder was credited with an assist on the play.
But Drexel buckled down from there and held Delaware scoreless over the final minute to clinch the win. Drexel, which outshot the Hens 15-11 and held an 8-5 advantage in corners, got four saves in the nets from Colleen McAndrew.
