NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team scored three straight goals Sunday afternoon as Molly Burke (Southbury, CT/Popmeraug) scored the game winning goal with 2:51 left in overtime as the Hens downed 19th ranked Hofstra, 3-2, in their Colonial Athletic Association opener at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (4-6, 1-0 CAA) trailed 2-0 at halftime as Kara McEneaney and Leslie DeSimone scored 1:38 apart as the Pride (5-4, 0-1 CAA) dominated the first half. Hofstra recorded 11 shots while Delaware was unable to get off any in the first half.

The Hens came out on fire though in the second half as sophomore A.J. Karsten scored her first goal of the season after tipping in a shot from Burke. Senior Katie Evans followed shortly after, stealing the ball from the goalkeeper and banging home her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

In Delaware’s fourth overtime game of the season, Burke broke free and scored the game winner on a pass from Alexis Esbitt with just 2:51 remaining.

The win for the Hens continues their dominance over the Pride as Delaware leads the all-time series 17-2. This is also the second win over a top 20 team this season for the Hens as Delaware defeated #16 Michigan State in the season opener earlier in the season.

The Blue Hens will return to action Friday when they host Virginia Commonwealth at Rullo Stadium at 7 p.m.
