NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team got back on track Sunday afternoon as Jessica Cortellino (right) scored the game winning goal in the shootout as the Hens edge Saint Joseph’s 3-2 at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (3-5) fell behind early as Nicole Antonini scored just 7:34 into the game but, Casey Howard posted her team leading fifth goal of the season to pull the Hens even at 1-1.
UD took its first lead of the game after Tori Karsten scored off a penalty corner to give the Hens a 2-1 lead. However, the Hawks (5-3) responded as Antonini notted her second goal of the game and seventh on the season to tie the game at 2-2.
After a scorless second period and two overtime periods the Hens played in their second shootout of the year. Delaware scored on four of its five opportunities and goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades made the game clinching save on Saint Joseph’s final attempt to tie the game.
The Blue Hens will return to action Friday when they host the Temple Owls at Rullo Stadium at 7 p.m.
