NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team defeated Syracuse University, 4-3 in a shootout, in the final game of the Blue Hen Classic Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

After regulation ended in a 3-3 tie, the teams played two scoreless overtime periods leading to a shootout. The Hens (2-2) then outscored Syracuse 3-0 in the second overtime shootout period with senior Katie Evans scoring the winning goal as the Blue Hens upended the Orange (1-2).

Delaware got two goals from sophomore Casey Howard and one from freshman Rachel Schexnayder during regulation. Howard’s second goal, with 19:15 left in the game, put the Hens up 3-2. However, Alison Babbitt tied the game just five minutes later to send the game to over-time.

In the first shootout both teams managed to score on four of their five efforts sending the game into a second shootout where the Hens prevailed.

Delaware, which snapped a two-game losing streak, got two goals in the shootout period from Howard and two from senior Lindsey Piester. Sophomore Jessica Cortellino and sophomore Tori Karsten also scored shootout goals for Delaware.

Senior Megan Allen posted a game-high four saves in regulation for Delaware and allowed no goals in the second shootout period.

The Blue Hens played most of the game without senior two time All-Region player Amanda Warrington who sustained a hand injury in the first half.

In the other Sunday game, No. 15 Ohio State defeated Penn 4-0, to improve to 3-0 on the year. Saskia Mueller poster her third goal of the season for the Buckeyes.

The Hens will next be in action when they travel to Rutgers next Sunday. Start time will be 1 p.m.
