RICHMOND, VA -- Senior Molly Burke (Southbury, CT/Pompertaug) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week after leading the Delaware field hockey team to a first place finish in the Buckeye Classic over the weekend.
In the opening round game, Burke (at right) scored her first goal of the season and led Delaware (2-0) to a dominating 4-0 victory over No. 13 ranked Ohio State on Saturday afternoon. It marked the highest ranked opponent that the Hens had beaten since a 2-1 win against No. 8 Old Dominion in the 2004 CAA Tournament.
The following day, Burke slammed home two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 victory over Kent State. It was the fourth multi-goal effort of her career, and the first one coming away from Rullo Stadium.
With her performance against the Golden Flashes, she became the first Blue Hen to record three goals in the first two games of the season since Erica LaBar accomplished the feat in 2003.
In 55 career games, Burke has tallied 16 goals and nine assists. A first team All-CAA selection in 2005, she was previously honored as the conference’s Player of the Week on August 29, 2005 when she scored two goals during the University of California tournament in Berkeley.
William & Mary’s Rebecca Wagner was named the CAA Rookie of the Week after she scored three goals in the Tribe’s victories over Lock Haven and Fairfield last week.
The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to take on the Richmond Spiders at 12 noon.
