NEWARK, DE -- Kimmy Schlezes and Amanda Warrington propelled the University of Delaware field hockey team to an impressive 8-2 victory over Monmouth at Rullo Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Hens improve to 7-0, tying the best start in program history. They also won seven straight games to start the 1994 campaign.
Delaware's eight goals were the most by the Hens since they topped Lehigh, 8-0, in 1998.
Schlezes (at right) posted the first multi-goal game of her career after scoring two of the Hens’ first three goals. Warrington also added two goals for her fifth career multi-score effort.
Amy Brewer also posted a goal and an assist, while Casey Howard scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Rachel Schexnayder and Michelle Drummonds also added second-half goals for the Hens
Delaware jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead before Molly Passarella scored the Hawks’ first goal of the game. Monmouth’s Sarah Keppel capped the scoring with less than 13 minutes remaining in the second half.
The Hens used all three of their goalies with redshirt freshman Stephanie Loizeaux making her first career appearance. Nikki Rhoades continued her solid season, allowing only a single goal in the first half, while Megan Allen shut down the Hawks during her 18 minutes of action
For the game, Delaware outshot Monmouth (0-5), 29-6, and held a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Saint Joseph’s for a showdown with the Hawks.
