NEWARK, DE -- The No. 18 ranked University of Delaware field hockey team fell in a heartbreaker to No. 13 Old Dominion, 1-0, on a last-minute goal during a Colonial Athletic Association match at Rullo Stadium.

With 34 seconds left in the second half, Old Dominion’s Loran Hatch took a pass from Titia Beek and snuck it past Nikki Rhoades for the game-winner.

The Hens’ defense held strong throughout most of the match, blocking seven shots. Rhoades (at right) also had a strong game in the cage, tying her season-high with five saves.

Rhoades has now allowed two goals or less in 11 of the team’s 12 games this season.

Delaware’s best shot to score came with 12 minutes left in the second half. Casey Howard took a clean shot on goal after handling a pass from Molly Burke. However, Kelly Driscoll, the Lady Monarch’s goalie, made an excellent glove-hand save to prevent the Hens’ goal.

Burke led the Hens (9-3, 2-2 CAA) with two shots, while Howard and Warrington added one apiece.

In the match, the Hens were outshot, 13-4. The Lady Monarchs (6-5, 3-0 CAA) also held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The loss snapped Delaware’s two-game roll. The Hens beat William & Mary, 4-2, on Friday night, while they trumped Virginia Commonwealth, 5-4, in double-overtime last Sunday.

The Blue Hens return to action on Friday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Northeastern to take on the Huskies.
