NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team scored the first two goals of the game, but the Penn Quakers posted a second-half rally to top the Hens, 3-2, at Rullo Stadium on Wednesday night.

Casey Howard and Michelle Drummonds (at right) notched the game’s first two goals, but the Quakers posted three unanswered scores late in the second half to capture the victory.

For the Hens (9-5), it was their third straight loss after starting the season 9-2. It was also the team’s second straight loss in non-conference play after they started the year 7-0 in that category.

During the match, the Hens scored the first goal off of a penalty corner. After Amy Brewer hit Jackie Tait with a perfect set, Casey Howard took the pass and drilled home her 10th goal of the season. She became the first Hen to net 10 or more goals in a season since Lauren Carr, Erica LaBar, and Amanda Warrington all accomplished the feat in 2004.

Following halftime, Delaware padded its lead after Michelle Drummonds scooted around the Penn defense and notched her fifth goal of the season.

Trailing 2-0, the Quakers (6-5) posted a furious second-half rally. In the 50th minute, Meghan Rose scored her first goal of the game. Just over seven minutes later, she was awarded a penalty stroke and immediately found an opening in the bottom left corner of the cage to tie the game at two.

In the 65th minute, Penn took its first lead of the game. Jamie Callahan took a pass from Nina Ferrier and snuck it past Delaware’s goalie Nikki Rhoades for the game-winner.

Rhoades held tough throughout much of the match despite facing a Quaker attack that held a commanding 18-7 advantage in shots. Although she allowed more than two goals for just the second time all year, she did record a season-high seven saves.

In addition to out-shooting Delaware, Penn also held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners

The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host the No. 2 ranked Maryland Terrapins at Rullo Stadium.
