RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware field hockey team won its 400th game in program history after junior Casey Howard scored a late goal to propel the Blue Hens to a 1-0 victory over Richmond in Virginia.

At 63:51 in the second half, Howard (at right) drilled the ball into the lower right corner of the net. It was her second straight game with a goal after posting one against Kent State last Sunday.

Hens’ goalie Nikki Rhoades shut out the Spiders and picked up the win after making her only save of the game in the 61st minute of action. It was her third career shutout and the second one of the season after blanking No. 13 Ohio State in the season opener.

Delaware outshot Richmond 11-5, including 7-2 in the second half. The two teams both posted one penalty corner apiece.

With the win, Delaware improved to 3-0 for just the second time in the past ten years. The 2005 squad also started with a three-game winning streak.

In the program’s 37th season, the Blue Hen field hockey team has posted a 400-236-39 record.

The victory also evened up the all-time series between Delaware and Richmond at 2-2. The Hens' only previous victory against the Spiders came in a 2-1 overtime win in 2002.

The Blue Hens return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they face Longwood in Richmond.
