PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The University of Delaware field hockey team had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Saint Joseph's after falling to the Hawks, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Molly Burke (at right) scored the Hens only goal, coming off of a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Rae Everson and Jackie Tait assisted on the goal.
The Hens (7-1) held strong throughout most of the first half before Saint Joseph’s got on the board just 23 seconds before halftime. On the play, Brianne Miller snuck a penalty corner past Nikkie Rhoades for her first goal of the season.
Just over nine minutes into the second half, the Hawks (3-4) struck again. Mary Beaman was awarded a penalty stroke, which she quickly deposited into the net.
Less than four minutes later, Burke put Delaware on the board with her fifth goal of the season. On the score, Tait tied Amanda Warrington for the team-lead in assists with four, while Everson recorded her first of the year.
Following the goal, the Hens posted five more shots, but none made it past the stingy Saint Joseph’s defense.
Hawks' goalie, Rebecca Cunfer, had a solid day in the net, posting seven saves. Three of them came in the last five minutes of action.
Despite the loss, Delaware held a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners, and the Hens tied the Hawks with 11 shots apiece.
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday at 6 p.m. when they open conference play against No. 8 ranked James Madison in Harrisonburg, VA.
