OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Casey Howard scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the University of Delaware field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Towson during a Colonial Athletic Association bout at Villa Julie on Sunday afternoon.
With less than seven minutes left in the first overtime, Howard took a pass from Kimmy Schlezes (at right) and slammed home her team-leading 12th goal of the season to seal the victory for the Hens.
The win was the 10th of the season for Delaware (10-7, 3-3 CAA). It is the first time the team has recorded 10 or more wins in a season since 2004, when the Hens won 15 contests and advanced to the NCAA tournament after capturing the CAA championship.
The victory also snapped Delaware’s five-game losing streak, which was the program’s second longest over the last seven seasons.
During the game, the Hens trailed 1-0 in the waning moments of the match. Then, following a Delaware penalty corner, Amanda Warrington took a pass from Howard and quickly deposited it in the back of the cage. It was Warrington’s fourth goal of the season and the 21st of her career.
In overtime, Delaware came out firing, posting five shots before Howard’s game-winner.
During the game, the Hens held a 15-12 advantage in shots, while Towson (6-10, 1-5) led in penalty corners, 9-7.
For the first 50 minutes of the match, the teams battled to a scoreless tie before Towson’s Kajee Murangi corralled a pass from Christina Boarman and snuck it past Nikki Rhoades.
Rhoades finished the game with six saves for the Hens, while the Tigers’ Michelle Cheek had 10.
The Hens have now won their last four matches that have gone into overtime and ten of the last twelve dating back to 2004.
The win also snapped Delaware’s two-game skid against Towson. Overall, the Hens have gone 27-6-1 in their 34 all-time meetings with the Tigers dating back to 1972.
Delaware returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when the team hosts the Drexel Dragons at Rullo Stadium.
