RICHMOND, VA -- Tori Karsten’s game-winning goal lifted the No. 17 ranked University of Delaware field hockey team to a 5-4 double-overtime victory during a Colonial Athletic Association bout with Virginia Commonwealth at Cary Street Field on Sunday afternoon.
Just 39 seconds into the second overtime period, Karsten (at right) took a pass from Casey Howard and found an opening in the left corner of the net.
Howard and Michelle Drummonds provided the rest of the offensive force for the Hens, recording two goals apiece. It was Howard’s fifth multi-goal game of her career, while it was Drummond’s first.
The double-overtime game was the longest match for Delaware (8-2, 1-1 CAA) since the squad defeated Saint Joseph’s, 3-2, during a shootout last season.
VCU (4-4, 1-1 CAA) jumped out early after Merel Kroon scored just over five minutes into the game. Howard then knotted the score at one after she recorded a goal off a backhand flip in the 20th minute.
The Rams quickly answered with two more goals in the first half. Emily Guerra scored in the 29th minute, and Rachel Krumm scored just four minutes later.
At halftime, the Hens replaced goalie Nikki Rhoades with veteran Megan Allen. After Allen surrendered VCU’s fourth goal on Rachel Krumm’s second score of the game just 13 minutes after halftime, she shut down the Rams' offense for the rest of the contest.
Howard cut into the deficit after recording her second goal of the game in the 56th minute. Michelle Drummonds then added her first of the contest with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.
Less than one minute later, Drummonds sent the game into overtime after knotting the game at four.
In the match, the Hens outshot the Rams, 22-13, just two days after they recorded only a single shot in a 1-0 loss to No. 8 James Madison.
With the victory, the Hens snapped their two-game skid and extended their winning streak against the Rams to seven games. Since the two schools first met back in 2001, Delaware has never lost to VCU.
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host the William & Mary Tribe at Rullo Stadium.
