Delaware - Boston Boxscore
NEWARK, Del. - Giovanna Monaco scored the game's only goal to give No. 14 Boston University a 1-0 victory over the University of Delaware field hockey team on the final day of the Blue Hen Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Nikki Rhoades (at right) held tough in the net for the Hens, posting two saves in her 70 minutes of action. In her three starts this season, she has allowed just five total goals.
With the loss, Delaware now stands at 0-4. The team had never gone winless in its first four contests before this year, although the Hens started 0-3 in 1995 before going on a late-season surge to finish with an 11-8 record.
During the game, Delaware opened the contest on the attack, firing two early shots by Lizzie Lewis and Alexis Esbitt. Neither Hen could find the back of the cage, though, as one shot went wide while another was batted away by Boston goalie, Kim Kastuk.
Following the Hens' second shot of the contest, the Terriers (2-1) uncorked three shots in just over six minutes of action, but the Delaware defense, led by Rhoades, stopped them all.
With the clock running out on the first half, Boston went back on the attack. In the Blue Hen zone, Allie Dolce hit a rocket towards the cage that was batted up in the air. After coming back down, Monaco corralled the ball and fired a strike into the cage. Although the goal was initially questioned by the referees, they eventually decided to let it stand.
Trailing by one, the Blue Hens could not quite muster a strong offensive attack in the second half. The stingy Terrier defense held tough, only allowing a single Delaware shot by Michelle Drummonds with two minutes remaining in the contest.
Kastuk eventually picked up the shutout for Boston after going the distance while posting one save.
In earlier action, Ohio State and Temple squared off with both teams sporting spotless 3-0 records. The Buckeyes eventually pulled out the win, posting a 3-0 victory. Melissa Palm led the way, recording a goal and an assist for OSU.
The Delaware field hockey team will return to action on September 14 when the squad travels to the University of Maryland to take on Syracuse at 12 noon. That game will be followed by a Maryland-Northwestern contest at 2 p.m. |
