NEWARK, Del. -- Ohio State’s Jenn Sciulli scored off a crossing pass with just 38 seconds left in the second overtime as Buckeyes spoiled the home opener for the University of Delaware field hockey team with a 2-1 victory at rainy Rullo Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The game was the opener of the annual Blue Hen Classic hosted by the University of Delaware. In the second game, Temple (3-0) defeated No. 14 Boston University (1-1) by a 3-2 score in overtime as Dannah Brehm scored four minutes into the extra session. Mandi Ruth scored two goals for Temple while Allie Dolce and Maryette Stuart scored for the Terriers.

Both games were played under intervals of heavy rain with the Delaware-Ohio State game delayed for 40 minutes late in the second half due to lightning. The second and final day of action will take place Sunday with Temple taking on Ohio State at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Delaware vs. Boston University game at 2 p.m.

Delaware, which opened the season with setbacks to nationally-ranked Michigan State and Duke last weekend at Louisville University, is off to an 0-3 start for the first time since 1995. Ohio State, which is coached by former Blue Hen All-American field hockey and lacrosse player and UD Hall of Fame member Anne Wilkinson, improved to 3-0 on the season.

Ohio State dominated the statistics, outshooting Delaware 28-6 and holding a 19-4 advantage in penalty corners. Delaware goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades posted 11 saves.

Delaware jumped out first in its game as junior Alexis Esbitt (at right) scored her first goal of the season and fourth of her career as she grounded a shot from 15 yards out on the right Buckeye goalkeeper Linda Quintiliani with 12:12 left in the opening half.

Ohio State knotted the score at 1-1 just over five minutes into the second half as Mikac scored her third goal of the season off a feed from Linda Haussener off a tap-in right in front of the net.

Neither team would score again although Ohio State had several chances. The Buckeyes had a goal disallowed with 5:38 left in regulation and Rhoades stopped a breakaway shot by Mikac with a nice diving save with two minutes left in regulation.

The game was stopped for 40 minutes due to lightning with just under a minute left to play in regulation. The teams returned to finish regulation, played through a scoreless 15-minute overtime, and nearly closed out the second 15-minute extra session before Sciulli’s game-winner.
