GLEN ALLEN, Va. - Florence Sijbrandij, a sophomore captain on the University of Delaware field hockey squad, earned second-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors as selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Sijbrandij (Arnhem, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium), who became the first sophomore captain in school history this season, helped anchor a strong defensive unit. A standout back, she also finished tied for the team-lead with 10 points during the year.
A starter in all 18 games, Sijbrandij tallied four goals and two assists. Her four goals were one off the team-lead, while her two assists were tied for the most by a Blue Hen. She also fired one of the team’s three game-winning goals, blasting the clincher in a 2-1 victory over Temple.
Sijbrandij also scored the team’s first goal of the season against No. 10 Michigan State, while she added scores in Delaware’s 2-1 overtime victory over VCU and in a close 2-1 setback to Old Dominion. She also chipped in with assists against William & Mary and Rutgers.
On the defensive side of the ball, she anchored a unit that allowed two goals or less in 11 of the team’s 18 games. She also posted one of Delaware’s two defensive saves after making a great play against Towson to block a Tiger shot and keep the game within reach.
Sijbrandij has appeared in 34 games over her two years with the team, including 32 starts. Last season, as a freshman, she started 14 games while leading the Hens to a 10-9 record and a tie for fifth-place in the conference standings.
With the honor, she was one of only five players from the Colonial Athletic Association to make the Mid-Atlantic team. Along with Sijbrandij, Towson’s Christina Boarman and Drexel’s Susan Ciufo, Carolina Gibernau, and Colleen McAndrew were also honored.
It marks the seventh straight season that a Blue Hen has earned All-Region honors. Sijbandij is also the 28th Delaware player to earn the accolade since 1990.
