GLEN ALLEN, Va. – Senior forward Casey Howard has been named to the first-team Mid-Atlantic All-Region team, while junior back Michelle Drummonds has earned second-team honors as selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
It marks the sixth time in the last eight years that the Blue Hens have had two All-Region selections. The award is Howard’s third career honor after she also earned first-team nods in 2006 and 2007, while it is the first of Drummonds’ career.
This season, Howard (top right) and Drummonds (bottom right) helped lead the Blue Hens to the Colonial Athletic Association championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to earning All-Region honors, both standouts were selected to the first-team All-CAA squad.
In 2009, Howard (Camden, Del. / Caesar Rodney) capped her career with one of the finest campaigns in Blue Hen history. During the year, she smashed the program’s single-season records for goals and points. Her 22 goals and 51 points both topped the previous marks set by Michelle Rosenbaum in 1988.
A two-time National Player of the Week selection, Howard also finished the year ranked second in the conference in goals and points. Her six game-winning goals also were the second-most in the CAA, while her seven assists were tied for seventh.
Overall, Howard finished her career with 51 goals, which currently rank third all-time in program history. Her 115 career points are the third most at Delaware as well. She also leaves Newark with the single-game scoring record after posting five goals against Brown earlier this year.
Drummonds (Elkton, Md. / Elkton) has also helped rewrite the record books with her outstanding junior campaign. In 2009, the team’s standout back posted a league-high seven defensive saves. Her total not only set a new single-season record, but it also was one more than the entire team recorded during the previous four years combined.
While anchoring Delaware’s strong defensive unit, Drummonds also made strong contributions on the offensive side of the ball. A starter in all 20 games, she recorded five points after posting two goals and an assist. In a 10-2 victory over Brown, she became the first Blue Hen in five years to notch a goal, assist, and defensive save in the same game.
In her career, Drummonds has appeared in 54 career games with 44 starts. A CAA All-Rookie selection in 2007, she has nine goals, eight defensive saves, and one assist during her three-year career.
Along with the two Blue Hens, 15 other players from the CAA were selected to All-Region teams, including five other Mid-Atlantic honorees.
