NEWARK, Del. – Former Blue Hen Standout Carly Campana has been named an assistant coach for the University of Delaware field hockey team, head coach Carol Miller announced today.

In addition to Campana, the Blue Hens also added Jessica Cortellino to the staff as a student assistant for the 2009 season.

Campana, a former captain of the Blue Hen field hockey team, was an assistant coach at Susquehanna University from 2006-07 prior to joining the Delaware staff. During her two seasons in Selinsgrove, she led the Crusaders to a 12-24 record.

While with Susquehanna, she helped plan and manage both practices and games. Campana also designed training packets for the field hockey team and evaluated young athletes who had the potential to play for the Crusaders.

Along with her coaching career at Susquehanna, she also served as the head coach of two club teams. Beginning in 2004, she led the Jersey Intensity Club Team, where she eventually guided the squad to the 2008 Festival U16 Pool Championship. In 2008, she also served as the curriculum director and head coach of the New Heights Club Team, during which she organized and directed the training program and curriculum.

In 2009, Campana also began serving as the Co-Director of the Princeton Sports Center field hockey program in Monmouth Junction, N.J. There, she recruited a staff comprised of top coaches from all collegiate levels to instruct young players. She also organized and oversaw the camp while it was in progress.

Along with her extensive coaching record, Campana also boasts an impressive playing career. She was a member of the Blue Hen field hockey team from 2001-05. During that time, she appeared in 59 games and started 34.

In 2004, she helped guide the team to a berth in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its first Colonial Athletic Association championship. She also led the team to the conference tournament in her first three seasons as well.

During her junior season, Campana set a school-record by appearing in all 22 games. The next year, she served as a captain on the team and started all 19 games for Delaware. Following that season, she was honored as the UD Alumni Association Team MVP. She also earned the Team Sportsmanship Award and was named as an alternate to the NFHCA North-South Senior All-Star Game.

A strong student as well, she was a perennial member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll during her stay in Newark. Eventually, she graduated with a degree in human services, education, and public policy with a minor in educational and disabled studies.

A native of Piscataway, N.J., Campana starred at Piscataway High School prior to joining Delaware. A Regional All-American honoree and two-time first-team All-State selection, she set a school record with 94 career goals and a Greater Middlesex County mark after leading the area in scoring for three straight seasons.

Like Campana, Cortellino also joins the staff following a successful playing career with the Blue Hens.

Prior to joining the coaching staff, Cortellino was a member of the squad from 2005-08. During those years, she appeared in 40 career games along the Blue Hen forward line. A native of Harrington, Delaware, Cortellino starred for Lake Forest High School prior to arriving in Newark. During her time with the Spartans, she was a first-team All-Conference selection and led the squad to four consecutive Henlopen Conference Southern Division Championships.

The two former Blue Hens join a staff guided by Miller, who is in her 17th year as the head coach. Erica Johnson-Crell also returns for her second season as an assistant coach on the staff.
