NEWARK, Del. –University of Delaware field hockey associate head coach Dawn Hill announced today that she would resign her position effective immediately.
Hill joined the Blue Hen staff in August, 2002 and was promoted to associate head coach under current head coach Carol Miller prior to the 2004 campaign. During her seven seasons in Newark, she helped Delaware post a 67-71 record and capture the program’s first-ever Colonial Athletic Association championship.
During her third season with Delaware, she helped lead the Blue Hens to a 15-7 record and their first CAA crown after posting a 5-1 victory over Hofstra in the title bout. The squad eventually became just the third one in program history to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Overall, Hill helped take Delaware to four CAA Tournaments, including the semifinals on three occasions. Under her guidance, the Blue Hens posted at least 10 victories in four separates seasons.
A highly-successful coach even before arriving in Newark, she was named the College Field Hockey Coaches Association National Coach of the Year after guiding Maryland to a third-place finish in the NCAA Tournament as an interim head coach in 1991-92. Hill also served as an assistant coach at Old Dominion, where she helped lead the Monarchs to National Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1992.
Following her stint in Norfolk, she took the reigns of the Virginia Commonwealth program and served as its head coach from 1997-01. Despite taking over a team that had won just six combined games in its previous two seasons, she eventually left Richmond with a 53-70-1 record.
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Hill enjoyed an outstanding playing career at Old Dominion. During her four seasons with the Monarchs, she helped the squad capture three straight national titles from 1982-84. As a senior in 1985, she also garnered All-American honors for her performance on the field.
After graduating from ODU, she served as a member of the U.S. National Team from 1989-90 after four years with the reserve squad. Later, she worked as an assistant coach with the national team from 1990-92 and was head coach of the U.S. National Under-21 team in 1992.
Head coach Carol Miller and assistant coach Erica Johnson-Crell will lead the Blue Hen field hockey team into the 2009 season opener against Michigan State at the Duke University Tournament on Saturday, August 29.
