RICHMOND, Va. – Junior back Missy Woodie has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week after helping lead the University of Delaware field hockey team to a pair of victories over the weekend.
Last week, the Blue Hens extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 5-2 on the season after posting a 3-0 victory over Temple on Friday before topping California, 2-1, on Sunday.
During the two games, Woodie helped anchor a defensive unit that held the opposition to just three shots on goal, including only one that found the back of the cage. While limiting the opponent’s offensive attack, the third-year standout also tallied four points of her own.
Against the Owls, Woodie was credited with the game-winning goal after opening the scoring at 2:09 in the first half. The goal, which marked her first of the season, came on just her second shot, and first on goal, of the 2009 campaign.
On Sunday, she returned to the field and set up both goals in the team’s grind-it-out victory over Cal. During the game, she posted an assist on each of Casey Howard’s two scores to help clinch the team’s fifth straight win.
Overall, Woodie currently leads the team and is tied for the top spot in the conference with five assists. Her total is also tied for the most by a Blue Hen in a single season since 2006.
In her career, the Fredericksburg, Va. native has appeared in 44 games with 43 starts. She is currently Delaware’s active career leader with 11 assists. A 2009 Preseason All-Conference selection, she was a second-team All-CAA pick last year and earned All-Rookie nods as a freshman in 2007.
Woodie shared her Player of the Week Award with Old Dominion’s Katie Ueberroth. Northeastern’s Nicola Graham was also honored as the league’s Rookie of the Week.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Friday when the team kicks off conference action with a 6 p.m. showdown against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond. - DDD -
