Blue Hen Field Hockey to Open Season Saturday at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, MI &emdash; The University of Delaware field hockey program opens the 2004 season this Saturday, August 28 at 2 p.m. against Michigan State at the Michigan State Championship Tournament.

Duke will also face-off against the University of Louisville at 11:30 a.m on Saturday. Consolation and championship games are to be held on Sunday, August 29 at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.

In 2004 the Hens are ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Conference after receiving two first place votes in the coaches poll. Last season they finished the CAA tournament in second place after posting a season record of 14-7, 6-3 in the CAA. This year they return over three-quarters of last years starting squad and most importantly three out of four All Region selections.

This season the Blue Hens will return 12 of last years 15 letterwinners. They will also be returning nine of last year's 11 starters. Erica LaBar, Jessi Balmer, and Leah Geib are just a few of these returning players who will be leading the team as captains this season. LaBar is a two time STX/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic pick as well as a first and third team All-American. Geib was a second team STX/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic pick in 2002 as well as a second team All-CAA selection. Balmer is a two-time STX/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic pick as well as a third team All-American in 2003. Together they combined for 71 points and 25 goals last season.

Also returning is starting goalkeeper Megan Allen. In 2003, she allowed a mere 38 goals in the net for the Hens. Allen posted 1.84 goals against average and was named CAA Rookie of the Week on three separate occasions. Head coach Carol Miller is also looking for Amber Deimler, Katie Evans, Kaili Kao, and Carly Campana to make big contributions as returnees this season. Molly Burke is also expected to see time as a true freshman this season.
