The No. 11 ranked University of Delaware field hockey team defeated Lafayette College today (Thursday) at Rullo Stadium 4-0. The Blue Hens improved their record to 13-3, 4-0 in the America East, and 8-1 at home. Lafayette fell to 6-8. Mia Callahan (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton HS) getting her first start of the season opened the scoring just five minutes into the game on an unassisted goal. The Hens continued to put pressure on the Leopards throughout most of the first half. Delaware broke through the Lafayette defense with nine minutes remaining in the first half when Jodi Byrd (Pocomoke HS, Md.) scored off an assist from Kelly Cawley (Oley HS, Pa.). The Hens continued to dominate play in the second half but had nothing to show for it until Megan McGuin (Newark, Del./Sanford School) scored off a penalty corner with assists from Jodi Byrd and Rachel Barger (Springfield, Va./Thomas Jefferson HS). Delaware finished the scoring when Megan Fortunato scored her second goal of the season unassisted with three minutes remaining. Kelly Adams (Patterson N.Y./Brewster HS) recorded seven saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season. Amy Cohen made 15 saves for Lafayette.
