Delaware vs. Maine Oct. 23, 1998 at 3:00 p.m. W 3-0
The No. 11 ranked University of Delaware field
hockey team clinched its third straight America
East playoff berth with a 3-0 win today (Friday)
over the Unviersity of Maine at Rullo Stadium. The
Hens improved their record to 14-3 overall and 5-0
in America East play, clinching a spot for the
four-team America East tournament field November
6-8 at Hofstra University. Maine fell to 8-7 for
the season and 2-3 in conference play. Rachel
Barger (Springfield, Va./Thomas Jefferson HS)
opened the scoring when she received a pass from
Juli Byrd (Pocomoke, Md., HS) with 14:53
remaining in the first half. In the sixth penalty
corner of the game, Jodi Byrd (Pocomoke,
Md., HS) eluded two Black Bears defenders and found
Sara Hills (Alexanderia, Va/St. Stephen's
open at the side of the net for the Blue Hens
second goal. The Blue Hens got an insurance goal
from Barger with 10 minutes remaining in the game
to make the score 3-0. Barger received an assist on
the goal from Kelly Cawley (Oley, Pa., HS).
Kelly Adams (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster HS)
had four saves to record the Blue Hens' 10th
shutout on the season and the 19th for Adams'
career. The Delaware defense has not allowed a goal
to an America East opponent this season. Maine's
Cindy Botett had three saves.
