In a battle of top 20 teams. The No. 14 Delaware
field hockey team defeated the No. 10 University of
Maryland today at Rullo Stadium 2-1. The Blue Hens,
who won their fifth straight game to improve to
7-1, scored both their goals in the first half.
Jodi Byrd scored off a penalty corner from
Sara Hills and Kelly Cawley with
23:20 remaining. Rachel Barger scored the
deciding goal for the Hens with 7:12 remaining.
Delaware withstood a relentless Terrapin attack
throughout the entire goal. Maryland outshot
Delaware 26-4 for the game and held a 22-2
advantage in penalty corners. Kelly Adams
kept the Blue Hens in the game with 22 saves
including a stick save with four minutes remaining
to give the Blue Hens the victory. The Terrapins
(6-2) scored on an unassisted goal from Sarah
Rappolt with 10 minutes remaining in the second
half. The Blue Hens ruined the return home for
Maryland head coach and Delaware alum Missy
Meharg. The Blue Hens also avenged an 8-1 loss
last year. The Blue Hens 7-1 start is their best
ever since 1994.
