Husky Classic at Connecticut Delaware vs. Providence Sept. 5, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. W 2-1
Senior Jodi Byrd scored two goals,
including the game winner early in the second half,
to lead the University of Delaware field hockey
team to a 2-1 win over Providence in the first
round of the Husky Classic Saturday at the
University of Connecticut. The Blue Hens, ranked
19th in the nation, improved to 2-0 on the season
and won the 300th game in school history. Byrd, an
All-Region selection in 1997 when she led Delaware
with 18 goals, opened the scoring with an
unassisted goal with 10:22 left in the opening
half. Providence (0-3) answered just three minutes
later when Jamie Shipman scored with 7:26 left in
the half. Delaware clinched the win when Byrd
scored her second goal of the game, also
unassisted, just eight minutes into the second
half.
