The No. 6 ranked University of Delaware team
field hockey ran its winning streak to eight games
today (Sunday), defeating America East foe Towson
University 3-0 at Rullo Stadium. This is the Blue
Hens' longest winning streak in school history in
one season since 1983. The Blue Hens record for
consective wins is 11 which occured in 1985- 86.
Delaware won the last seven games in 1985 and the
first four games of 1986. Jodi Byrd
(Pocomoke HS, Md.) opened the scoring with an
unassisted goal with 11 minutes remaining in the
first half. Kelly Cawley (Oley HS, Pa.) made
the game 2-0 on a goal assisted by Rachel
Barger (Thomas Jefferson HS/Springfield, Va.).
Juli Byrd (Pocomoke HS, Md.) finished off
the scoring with 20 seconds left in the game off a
penalty corner from Cawley and Sara Hills
(St. Stephen's HS/Alexanderia, Va.). Kelly
Adams (Brewster HS/Patterson, N.Y.) posted her
third consective shutout. The last time Delaware
had three or more consecutive shutouts was 1995
when the Blue Hens shut out four straight
opponents. The Blue Hens improved to 10-1 (3-0
America East) on the season and Towson fell to 4-5
(0-1 America East).
