Sept. 25, 1999
HARRISONBURG, VA -- The Dukes of
James Madison (3-1) handed No. 7 Delaware its first loss of
the 1999 season, 21-7, Saturday night.
The Dukes shutdown the Delaware offense
when it counted, forcing four turnovers and seven sacks
(three by Chris Morant) among 15 Blue Hen plays for negative
yardage. Delaware outgained James Madison, 352-175, and had
a 25-8 advantage in first downs. The Blue Hens also had
nearly a 2-1 advantage in time possession (UD -
37:49).
James Madison took a 6-0 lead on a Blue
Hen turnover. With Delaware going for it on a
fourth-and-goal at the 1, Matt Nagy's option pitch,
intended for Butter Pressey was deflected by Mark
Coates and returned 94 yards for a touchdown. Mike Glover's
PAT kick failed.
The Dukes extended that lead to 14-0 when
Charles Berry found Earnest Payton with a 46-yard touchdown
pass just 2:31 after Coates' score. The two-point conversion
was good on a pass from Berry to Marc Bacote.
Delaware got on the board in the third
quarter when Brian Ginn, in relief of Nagy, drove the
Blue Hens 80 yards in 14 plays, including a key
fourth-and-three keeper to the 2. The next play, Craig
Cummnings went over from the 2 to make it a 14-7 game
with 8:31 remaining in the quarter.
However, late in the third quarter Curtis
Keaton scored on a 23-yard scamper to make it a 21-7.
Keaton's score was set-up by a 36-yard pass from Berry to
Payton.
The scoreless first half was the first
for the Blue Hens since Nov. 9, 1996.
James O'Neal led the Blue Hen rushing
attack with 22 carries for 84 yards, a career-high. Butter
Pressey also had 12 carries for 61 yards.
Nagy finished 4 for 9 for 61 yards and 1
INT. Ginn was 10 of 22 for 104 yards and 1 INT.
