NEWARK, DE -- Quarterback Phil
Stambaugh passed for 410 yards and three touchdowns and No.
9 ranked Lehigh turned a blocked punt into a touchdown
midway through the final quarter for some breathing room as
the Mountain Hawks posted a 42-35 non-league football
victory over No. 12 University of Delaware Saturday
afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks (6-0) extended the
longest regular season winning streak in NCAA Division I
football to 18 games and downed the Blue Hens (4-2) for the
first time since 1985 after six straight losses. Delaware
had a 12-game winning streak vs. non- Division I-A
non-league opponents snapped. The game was played before a
sellout crowd of 22,032.
Lehigh, the third-highest scoring team in
NCAA I-AA, piled up 492 total yards and scored in every
quarter as Stambaugh, the nation's No. 2 ranked passer,
connected on 26 of 41 passes and 410 yards, the fifth
highest passing total ever vs. the Blue Hens. Wide receiver
Rick Moore caught nine passes for a career-high 224 yards
and two touchdowns while tailback Ron Jean ran for 116 yards
and two scores.
Delaware's Matt Nagy hit on 16 of
29 passes for 230 yards (216 in the second half) and two
touchdowns, the final one a 43-yard pass to halfback
Butter Pressey that cut the lead to 42-35 with 1:26
left to play. Lehigh then ran out the clock for the
win.
Lehigh, the defending Patriot League
champions and a 1998 NCAA quarterfinalist, built a 35-14
lead on a six-yard scoring toss from Stambaugh to Moore with
8:21 left in the third quarter but the Hens rallied as
Pressey (team-high 70 yards rushing) scored on a one-yard
dive and Nagy hit Jamin Elliott on an 11-yard scoring
toss with 13:04 left in the game to cut the lead to
35-28.
But just when Delaware had some momentum,
Lehigh stuffed it as Sam Perryman blocked Ryan
Bleiler's punt at the Delaware eight-yard line and Avon
Mack recovered the fumble in the end zone to up the Mountain
Hawk lead to 42-28 with 10:21 left.
"I wasn't very happy with our
demonstration today," said Delaware head coach Tubby
Raymond. "We let too many people in the open and when I
thought we could control the game offensively, we couldn't.
At times we played well, but we just made too many mistakes
to win the game. They (Lehigh) are as good or better than
any team we will see in the Atlantic 10."
Both teams scored on their opening drive
to start the high scoring affair. Delaware's Craig
Cummings opened the scoring with a one- yard dive one
minute into the game and Jean followed with a two- yard dive
1:20 later. Lehigh eventually went up 21-14 at halftime as
Stambaugh hit Moore on a 15-yard scoring pass 2:46 before
intermission.
