Delaware 37, Northeastern 34 OT
October 30, 1999

BOSTON - James O'Neal scored from three yards out in overtime as the University of Delaware rallied to defeat Northeastern, 37-34, in Atlantic 10 Football action, snapping a two-game losing streak Saturday at Parsons Field.

The Blue Hens (5-3, 3-2) tied the game on a Garon Sizemore 24-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation.

Northeastern (1-7, 0-5) scored first in the extra-session on a 33-yard field goal by Joe Connolly. Delaware took over possession and opened with Butter Pressey going four yards on a misdirection. O'Neal followed with an 18-yard run to set up first-and-goal at the 3. O'Neal then broke through the line for the game-winner.

"I just followed the line," said O'Neal of his winning score. "They did a good job. People stepped up today and that is a credit to our team. I saw the endzone and I thought, 'I've got to get in'. The game was on the line."

"Things looked bleak from the opening whistle today," said Delaware coach Tubby Raymond. "I thought we would never win. We used a great span of emotion today. The defense came up and played the way they are capable of."

Northeastern, which hasn't beaten Delaware in seven meetings, waisted no time in jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the game's first 71 seconds. The Huskies needed just three plays to go 71 yards on their first possession, capping it with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Adam Browne to Dave Klemic.

On Delaware's first play from scrimmage, fullback Steve Ricco fumbled at the Blue Hen 32. Ricco's fumble was returned to the Delaware eight-yard line by William Griffin. After Northeastern failed to move the ball, Connolly connected on a 25-yard field goal to give the Huskies a 10-0 lead.

Delaware came back to take a 14-10 lead, however, before the end of the quarter on a one-yard touchdown dive by quarterback Brian Ginn, starting for the injured Matt Nagy, and a six-yard scoring burst by Ricco.

Northeastern retook the lead with 5:15 remaining in the first half on Tim Gale's three-yard touchdown run. Gale finished the day with 116 yards rushing on 25 carries - the first time this season a Husky ran for 100 yards.

The Huskies took a 24-14 lead on their first possession of the second half. After holding Delaware on fourth-and-one at the Northeastern 48, the Huskies went 52 yards in 11 plays, capped by a two-yard scoring run by Gale.

Delaware came right back with an eight-play, 73-yard drive to cut the deficit to 24-21. On fourth-and-one at the Northeastern 21, Ginn found a wide-open Jason VanKerkhoven for a 21-yard touchdown strike.

After Femi Ayi stripped Browne to give the Blue Hens the ball at the Delaware 23 and stop what looked-to-be a Northeastern scoring drive, Delaware marched 77 yards in six plays to take the lead. Ricco scored his second touchdown of the day, going virtually untouched up the middle from 15 yards out to give Delaware a 28-24 lead.

Northeastern, however, was able to score off another Delaware fumble to regain the lead. After a Husky punt, Ginn fumbled on Delaware's second play to give Northeastern the ball at the Delaware 23. Five plays later, Browne found Klemic for a 10-yard scoring strike to make it a 31-28 game.

However, Sizemore's late field goal set the stage for overtime.

Ginn finished the day 15 of 29 for 222 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and was not sacked. O'Neal, a junior transfer from Iowa State, carried 16 times for a career-high 83 yards, while Pressey had nine carries for 66 yards. Browne finished the day 17 of 30 for 204 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
