Delaware Outlasts Richmond, 41-33
Oct. 2, 1999

NEWARK, DE -- In what was supposed to be a match-up of the two of the top defensive teams in the Atlantic 10, No. 14 University of Delaware outlasted Richmond, 41-33, Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 22,082 at Delaware Stadium.

The teams combined for 959 yards for the game and 47 points in the second quarter alone. Delaware (4-1, 2-1) outgained Richmond, 550-409, marking the first time this season the Blue Hens gained over 400 yards in total offense. The Hens avenged a 45-6 loss to the defending Atlantic 10 champion Spiders a year ago.

Delaware used a nice balance of run and pass as QB Matt Nagy enjoyed his best effort of the season, hitting on 13 of 20 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown. Jamin Elliott caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a reverse. HB Butter Pressey had a career-high 114 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns while fullback Steve Ricco added 89 yards and a score.

For Richmond, QB Jimmie Miles connected 16 of 26 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Muneer Moore who caught nine passes for 138 yards. HB TyRonne Turner rushed for 103 yards, including a 64-yard scoring jaunt with 3:12 left in the first half that cut the Delaware lead to 21-20.

"I'm pleased to see it starting to come around a little bit," said Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond, whose team had struggled early despite a 3-1 record entering the game. "We had been playing under a dark cloud until today. We had a looseness that I had not seen until today."

The win was not sealed for the Blue Hens until cornerback Tyrone Bowden picked off a Miles pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown with 44 seconds left to play.

After Richmond jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead on a Miles to Moore 23-yard touchdown pass, the teams combined for 47 points in the second quarter.

Delaware started the scoring frenzie with a Pressey two-yard touchdown run with 12:41 left in the quarter.

The Spiders wasted no time in responding as Moore caught a 29-yard scoring strike from Miles to make it a 14-6 game.

Delaware answered that score six plays later when Nagy hit Elliott on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Nagy threw to Ricco for the two-point conversion to tie the game, 14-14, with 8:43 still remaining in the quarter.

Richmond's next possession was stopped by a Turner fumble at the Delaware 39, and the Blue Hens took advantage of the mistake. On the first play after the fumble, Nagy hit Pressey for 31 yards to the Richmond 26. Three plays later, Ricco scored on a five-yard run to give Delaware a 21-14 lead.

Again, though, Richmond had an answer. On its first offensive play, Turner raced 64 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown to cut the UD lead to 21-20.

Delaware scored again on its next possession when Pressey scored on a 13-yard touchdown run. His scamper was set-up by a 51-yard pass from Nagy to Brett Veach on third-and-12 from the Delaware 18.

Richmond wasn't done, though, as Roane returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to make it a 28-26 game at halftime.

The defenses restored order in the second half. Elliott recorded the only score of the third quarter when he scored on a five-yard reverse to give Delaware a 35-26 lead.

Richmond closed to within two with 5:52 remaining when Miles found Dwaune Jones for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-33.
