Blue Hens Top The Citadel, 26-16

CHARLESTON, SC -- Craig Cummings tied a career-high with three rushing touchdowns and Butter Pressey broke lose for a fourth as Delaware defeated The Citadel, 26-16, Saturday night.

Cummings, a junior from Eastchester, NY, finished the night with 15 carries for 89 yards, his second-best rushing total of his collegiate career.

"I'm happy coach has confidence in me," said Cummings. "The offensive line has played very well in the first two games. They opened up some big holes tonight."

After the Bulldogs got on the board first with a 31-yard field goal by Nick Haas, Delaware took a 13-3 lead on Cummings' first two touchdown runs of the night. Cummings put Delaware on the board with 1:06 left in the first half with a 12-yard scoring run. The run was set up by a 4th down and 11 pass from Matt Nagy to Brett Veach for 23 yards and a first down.

Cummings' second score of the game came on a three-yard run with 9:48 left in the first half. Garon Sizemore's PAT kick was wide, however, leaving the score at 13-3.

The Citadel (0-2) pulled to within 13-10 just before halftime. A Cummings fumble gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Delaware 25. Eight plays later Deon Jackson ran it in from the 1 with just :05 remaining in the half.

Cummings, however, scored again for Delaware with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter on a three-yard run. Sizemore's PAT failed once again to make it a 19-10 game.

Pressey, the hero of last week's game after scoring the deciding touchdown in the second overtime against William & Mary, put the game out of reach with a nifty 40-yard touchdown run. Pressey broke back against the grain and got a big block from Steve Ricco to give Delaware a 26-10 lead with 10:50 to play. The Newark, DE native finished the night with 79 yards rushing.

The Bulldogs pulled to within 26-16 when Travis Cunningham recovered a Nagy fumble in the endzone. The two-point conversion failed.

"I like what we're doing," said Delaware coach Tubby Raymond. "We're coming along slowly, but we're building something here. We're where we would to be, but we don't want to be where people think we've arrived already."

Nagy surpassed 4,000 passing yards for his career in the game, going 9 for 14 for 109 yards in the game.

Delaware outgained The Citadel, 375-174, including 266 yards on the ground by the Blue Hen rushing attack. The Bulldogs, however, were able to capitalize on two of Delaware's three turnovers to stay in the game much of the night.

Delaware returns home to face backyard-rival West Chester Saturday at 1 p.m.
