Delaware 14, New Hampshire

November 6, 1999
DURHAM, NH -- The University of Delaware rallied from a
10-0 deficit for the second straight week to defeat
University of New Hampshire, 14-10, Saturday afternoon in
Atlantic 10 Football action at Cowell Stadium.
The Blue Hens, ranked No. 25 in the Sports Network Poll,
moved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic 10 with its second
straight win. New Hampshire fell to 3-6, 1-5 with its third
straight loss. The win was Delaware's 11th in a row when
visiting New England dating back to 1994 and was the fourth
straight over the Wildcats.
Delaware's defense, which had allowed 26 or more points
each of the last four games, held the scoring New Hampshire
offense, which was averaging 30.1 points per game, scoreless
in the second half and to 409 total yards, including just
150 in the second half.
"Kudos to the defense," said Delaware head coach Tubby
Raymond, whose team clinched its 31st winning season in 34
years and kept its post-season playoff chances alive. "I
never dreamed we'd shut them down like we did. There was so
much for our defense to digest and adjust to this week with
the type of offense they have but we played very well in the
second half. We have a lot of players out (with injuries) on
defense but our young kids did well. This was a big ball
game."
New Hampshire won the battle for field early on with the
Hens starting five of their first six possessions inside
their own 15. The Wildcats, however, could only translate
that into three points courtesy of a 19-yard field goal by
Shawn MacLean with 4:52 left in the first quarter.
New Hampshire took a 10-0 lead with 4:03 left in the
second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Day to
Jermaine Washington capping a six-play, 50-yard drive.
The Blue Hens took advantage of New Hampshire's only
turnover of the day to get on the board just before
halftime. After Tyrone Bowden recorded his fourth
interception of the season to give Delaware the ball at the
New Hampshire 35, Delaware senior quarterback Brian Ginn
marched the Hens down the field.
Ginn, who improved to 14-2 all-time at Delaware as a
starter, scrambled 19 yards of the first play of the drive
to the Wildcat 16. Two plays later, Ginn found Craig
Cummings over the middle for 11 yards to set up
first-and-goal at the 5. Cummings and Ginn teamed up again
two plays later for a two-yard touchdown toss.
Delaware took the lead for good on its second possession
of the second half. After a UNH punt gave Delaware the ball
at midfield, Delaware marched 50 yards in 13 plays to take
the lead. Backup halfback Derrick Downs capped the drive
with a two-yard touchdown run around the right side to give
Delaware a 14-10 lead.
New Hampshire threatened twice late in the fourth
quarter, but a sack by Femi Ayi on a fourth and five from
the Delaware 14-yard line and an incomplete pass at the Blue
Hen 34-yard line turned the ball over on downs on both
possessions.
"Our defense was fired up today, a lot like we were
earlier this season," said Ayi, a redshirt freshman
defensive end and the team's only New Hampshire native
(Nashua). "We had that feeling that we could stop them.
We've lost some players (to injuries) and we know some of us
young guys had to pick it up. I was way to nervous today
(playing before so many family and friends) early in the
game but I came out in the second half and just told myself
not to let it bother me."
