Blue Hen Defense Shines Again; Shuts Out Citadel 38-0

Sept. 9, 2000

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware defense came up with its second straight big effort and senior quarterback Matt Nagy threw for 214 yards and went over the 5,000-yard mark for his career as the No. 13 ranked Blue Hens romped over The Citadel 38-0 in a non-league football game Saturday night at Delaware Stadium.

The Hens (2-0), who allowed just 92 yards in a season-opening 29-7 win over Rhode Island last week, held the Citadel (0-2) to just 82 total yards and six first downs in a dominating effort. It was the Hens 11th win their last 12 home openers at Delaware Stadium. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 22,075 that witnessed the first game under Delaware's new permanent lights.

"We have strength and we have speed," said Delaware defensive end Femi Ayi of the UD defense. "I think we know what it takes to get the job done. We know that if the offensive struggles, we can help the team by holding down the opponents."

"The defense continues to play well," said Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond. "And we will only get better. This whole football team will continue to improve."

Delaware posted its second straight home shutout for the first time since 1995 and held two consecutive opponents under 100 total yards for the first time in school history. Citadel, which lost its opener to I-A Clemson 38-0, suffered back to back shutouts for the first time since 1970.

Nagy (Manheim Central/Manheim, PA) hit on 12 of 28 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown to lead the Blue Hen offense. In the process, he recorded his 14th career 200-yard passing effort. He also became just the fourth player in UD history to reach the 5,000 career passing yardage mark with a first quarter touchdown pass to Butter Pressey. (Newark, Del. HS)

James O'Neal (Sachem/Commack, NY) led the Hen rushing effort with 54 yards while Pressey rushed for 30 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass from Nagy. Jamin Elliott (Churchland/Portsmouth, VA) caught six passes for 155 yards.

Citadel quarterback Joe Call was 7 of 15 for 42 yards passing while Nate Mahoney rushed for a team-high 37 yards. The Bulldogs had 41 yards rushing and 41 passing for the game.

Dan Mulhern (Strath-Haven/Wallingford, PA) led the Blue Hen defensive effort with 11 tackles, including three for loss, and also recovered a fumble that led to a UD touchdown. Brian McKenna (Columbia/South Orange, NJ) eight tackles, one sack, and intercepted a pass that led to another UD score.

Craig Cummings (Iona Prep, NY/Ocean City, MD) and Antawn Jenkins (Tallwood/Virginia Beach, VA) also scored touchdowns for the Hens while Scott Collins (John Carroll/Bel Air, MD) kicked a 46-yard field goal to end the first half and connected on all five extra point attempts.
