Nagy Sets
Records as Blue Hens Down JMU 33-14
Oct. 28,
2000
NEWARK, DE -- Senior Matt
Nagy threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns and became
the University of Delaware's all-time leader in career
passing yards as the second-ranked Blue Hens topped No. 15
James Madison 33-14 in Atlantic 10 Conference football
action Saturday at Delaware Stadium before a sellout
Homecoming crowd of 22,009.

Nagy, a senior from Manheim, PA, passed Bill
Vergantino's (1989-92) career mark of 6,487 yards midway
through the second quarter and finished with 6,611 career
passing yards before leaving the game with a slight leg
strain in the final quarter. Nagy, who hit on 17 of 33
passes, also tied Vergantino's school mark when he threw his
47th career touchdown pass, a 36-yard strike to Brett
Veach, with 11:35 left in the game to ice the
win.
With the win, Delaware moved to 8-0
overall and 5-0 in Atlantic 10 action, reaching the 8-0 mark
for the sixth time in school history and for the first time
since 1995. The Hens' No. 2 ranking is their highest since
1993.

"I can't remember a Delaware defense that
played that dominant in the first part of the game," said
Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond of the Hens' top
ranked defense that held the Dukes to just 20 first quarter
yards. "What pleased me most about the defense is that
later, when things turned against them, the battled and hung
in there. The offense did the same thing."
After James Madison had the cut the lead
to 20-14 on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Delvin
Joyce with 11:05 left in the third quarter, the Hens pulled
away. After a negative two-yard punt into the wind by JMU
punter Jess Wade, the Hens got the ball on the JMU 13-yard
line and scored on their first play on a reverse by spread
end Jamin Elliott to go up 26-14 with 4:27 left in
the third quarter. The Hens then iced the game, moving 93
yards on nine plays capped by Veach's 36-yard touchdown
reception from Nagy with 11:35 left.
Delaware got on the board first when
sophomore Scott Collins booted the first of his two
field goals on the afternoon. He connected on a 22-yard kick
with 7:42 left in the first quarter to give the Blue Hens a
3-0 lead.
Delaware scored on its next possession,
which was set up by a Ricardo Walker interception to
give the Blue Hens the ball at the Dukes' 44. Five plays
later, Nagy found Elliott for a 13-yard scoring pass for a
10-0 advantage.
The Blue Hens extended that lead to 17-0
on a 30-yard scoring strike from Veach to Nagy with 9:37
left in the first half.
James Madison responded, however, on the
ensuing possession to pull to within 17-7. After two Charles
Berry completions moved the ball to the Delaware 47, Brannon
Goins broke loose for 47 yards down the left sideline for a
touchdown. The score broke Delaware's 17 quarter, 269-
minute scoreless streak at Delaware Stadium that dated back
to last season.
Collins added a 42-yard field goal just
before half to give Delaware a 20-7 advantage going into the
locker room. That possession was set up by a Berry fumble at
the Delaware 26 with Mike Furline recovering. The
senior quarterback was hit after fumbling the ball and left
the game for good with a concussion.
A Delaware miscue on the second half
kickoff led to James Madison's second score that cut the
lead to 20-14. The kick got caught up in the 30 mph winds
and was muffed by a Delaware up-man. After the Dukes
recovered at the Delaware 29, they marched down to the
Delaware 4. Reserve quarterback Mike Connelly rushed right
and fumbled the ball into the end zone. Delaware
linebacker Dan Mulhern (14 tackles) dove for the ball
as it was about to go out of the end zone, but knocked it
back in, where it was recovered by Joyce for the touchdown.
However, Delaware took over from there.
Elliott scored on an end around from 13 yards out to give
the Blue Hens a 26-14 lead with 4:27 left.
Nagy enjoyed his 18th career 200-yard
passing effort while Veach, a junior from Mt. Carmel, PA,
finished the day with a pair of career highs with eight
catches for 136 yards. James O'Neal was Delaware's
leading rusher with 15 carries for 65 yards. Goins led JMU
with 57 yards rushing while Berry threw for 104 yards. JMU
All-American defensive end Chris Morant had eight tackles,
including two sacks.
"This was a special day for me," said
Nagy of his record-breaking performance. "First of all it
was important for us to win this game. I'm just blessed to
have some talent and some great teammates."
