BOSTON -- L.J. McKanas rushed 36
times for 161 yards and the University of Delaware suffered
its worst offensive output in school history as Northeastern
University defeated the 24th-ranked Blue Hens for the first
time ever, 20-7, in an Atlantic 10 football contest Saturday
at Parsons Field.
The Blue Hens (1-3, 1-2) were limited to
just 56 yards of total offense and zero yards rushing. The
previous school mark for lowest offensive total was 76 yards
against Bucknell in a season-ending 21-14 loss back on Nov.
21, 1964. The lowest total by a Tubby Raymond team
prior to Saturday was 85 yards against Grambling in a 17-8
NCAA Playoff loss in Atlantic City's Convention Hall back on
Dec. 1, 1973. That was the only other time a Raymond-coached
team was held under 100 yards in total offense.
Antawn Jenkins rushed for a team-high 36
yards on 14 carries. Beyond that, Delaware's next highest
rushers were Butch Patrick and Butter Pressey with one yard
each.
Entering the game, Northeastern's defense
had allowed an average of 425 yards (ranked No. 104 in NCAA
I-AA) and 38.5 points in its first three games. Northeastern
had never held Delaware under 24 points. Last year, Delaware
thumped the Huskies, 42-0, rolling up 519 yards of offense,
including 372 rushing, at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware's defense did its best to keep
the game close. The Blue Hens held Northeastern to 256 total
yards, with Sidney Haugabrook picking off two passes for the
second straight week. However, it was not enough to make up
for the offense's struggles.
Northeastern was just 3 for 17 on third
down, but Delaware was just 1 for 16 and had five
turnovers.
"We're beyond disappointment," said
Raymond. "I couldn't imagine that we could play this poorly.
Northeastern was outstanding in every facet of the game, and
we couldn't do anything at all. We have to start all over
and get back to fundamentals."
Northeastern took a 6-0 lead in the first
quarter when Sam Postlethwait was hit and fumbled and
Art Smith picked it up and raced 53 yards for a touchdown.
Nate Mallaugh's PAT kick was blocked.
Delaware came back to take a 7-6 lead
with 9:23 left in the first half on Pressey's one-yard
touchdown run and Scott Collins' PAT.
After a scoreless third quarter, the
Huskies, who had lost all eight previous meetings with
Delaware, took the lead for good when McKanas raced 30 yards
for a touchdown on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Northeastern (1-2, 1-2) converted the two-point conversion
to take a 14-7 lead. That score snapped a 118-minute
scoreless streak for the Delaware defense.
On Delaware's first play of the next
possession, Postlethwait was intercepted by T.J. Hill. Hill
returned the ball back to the Delaware 22. The Blue Hen
defense held and got the ball back on downs.
However, Delaware's offense failed to get
a first down once again and fumbled the snap on the punt,
giving the Huskies the ball at the Delaware 7. One play
later, McKanas scored from seven yards out to give
Northeastern a 20-7 lead with 12:01 to play. The PAT kick
failed.
Delaware had several chances after that,
twice getting the ball at midfield. However, the Blue Hens
failed to pick up a first down in the entire second half. On
14 of its posessions, the Blue Hens ran three plays or less,
including each of the last four after McKanas' second
touchdown of the day. Chris Steinert's 11 punts tied
the second-most in UD history. Steinert was one of the lone
bright spots for the Blue Hens, averaging 45.9 yards on his
punts.
The Blue Hens, who had won 13 straight in
New England prior to Saturday, head back to New England next
Saturday to face New Hampshire at 12 noon.
