Delaware 10, Richmond 6   Tubby Raymond Wins 300th Game as Defense Shines Again November, 10 2001 Tubby Raymond became just the eighth coach in the history of college football to reach 300 victories with Saturday's win over Richmond NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware head coach Harold R. "Tubby" Raymond became just the ninth coach in college football history to win 300 games Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens posted a 10-6 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Richmond at Delaware Stadium. A crowd of 18,923 watched Raymond join Eddie Robinson, John Gagliardi, Joe Paterno, Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, Pop Warner, Amos Alonzo Stagg and Roy Kidd as the only head coaches to win 300 career games. Now in his 36th season at the helm of the Blue Hens, Raymond is just the fourth coach to win all 300 games at the same school, joining Robinson, Paterno, and Kidd. Raymond's career mark now stands at 300-118-3. The Blue Hen defense brought the win home for Raymond, holding the Spiders to just two Doug Kirchner field goals and 250 total yards. Richmond (2-7, 2-5 Atlantic 10) had the ball three times in the final six minutes, but could never score. The only offense the Blue Hens (4-5, 4-4) have allowed in the last two games is three field goals. The Spiders could muster got a 26-yard field goal from Kirchner to pull to within four points with 5:59 to play but Delaware held Richmond on a pair of fourth downs in the final 2:30, including the final play of the game. Delaware players, including 18 seniors playing their final home game at Delaware Stadium, hoisted Raymond on their shoulders and paraded him around the field. Raymond, who turns 75 this Wednesday, later addressed the crowd. Vince Wilson (41) makes the stop on fourth down to preserve the win. "This was one of the most pressured situations in my life," said Raymond in the post-game press conference of his quest for 300 wins. "Everyone has been asking about it. It was nice to get it at home. It's such a wonderful thing. Delaware football has been my life and I've been lucky to see a lot of good things happen. Delaware football is a family and everyone of those kids who have played here and those who have coached here have contributed to this." Richmond, which lost to the Hens at Delaware Stadium for the seventh straight time, got on the board first when Kirchner kicked a 46-yard field goal with 3:36 left in the first quarter to cap an eight-play, 25-yard drive. Kirchner had missed from 34 yards out midway through the quarter, but the Spiders' defense held Delaware and gave the offense the ball near midfield. Delaware tied the game on its next possession. The Blue Hens drove 68 yards in 10 plays with Scott Collins kicking a 30-yard field goal with just 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Hens took the lead for good just before halftime. After Vinnie Murray's 17-yard punt gave Delaware great field position at the Richmond 35, the Blue Hens marched the distance in five plays. Halfback senior Butter Pressey scored his 34th career touchdown on a seven-yard scamper up the middle. Collins' extra point gave Delaware a 10-3 lead. The defenses took over from there until the fourth quarter. Richmond gained a possession at the Delaware 46 and marched down the field. Twelve plays later, the drive stalled at the Delaware eight yard-line. Richmond coach Jim Reid elected to kick the field goal on 4th-and-5 and Kirchner converted to pull Richmond to within 10-6. However, that is as close as they would get. After Delaware went three-and-out on its next possession, the Blue Hen defense held. Richmond had a fourth and four situation at the Delaware 43, but Mike Adams stopped J.R. Purnell for no gain. The Delaware offense could not manage a first down on its next possession. A great hit by Jameer Rasheed on Chris Steiner's punt pinned Richmond back at its own 15 with one minute to play. The Spiders were able to convert one fourth down when Cordell Roane rushed up the middle to the 27 on fourth and one. However, four plays later, Roane's pass to Boyd Ouden was incomplete and Raymond's players began the celebration by dousing him with ice water. Delaware managed just 11 first downs and 172 total yards with quarterback Mike Connor being sacked six times. Delaware sophomore fullback Antawn Jenkins led all rushers with 16 carries for 78 yards. Purnell led Richmond with 53 yards rushing while Roane carried 22 times for 17 yards. Sidney Haugabrook, Ron Cook, Darrell Edmonds, and Dan Mulhern each had nine tackles for the Blue Hens while Richmond linebacker Adrian Archie had 11 tackles and two sacks. Delaware will complete its regular season next Saturday at Villanova with the Blue Hens hoping to get a win to clinch its 14th straight non-losing season.
