Offense Returns as Hens Roll Past Wildcats; Give Raymond Win No. 298

October 6, 2001

Sam Postlethwait threw for 253 yards and three TDs as the Blue Hen offense got back on track.

DURHAM, NH -- Oh, what a difference a week makes.

The University of Delaware offense returned with an explosion Saturday, rolling up 480 yards in a 49-36 win over New Hampshire in Atlantic 10 football action.

The offensive outburst came one week after Delaware was held to an all-time low 56 yards in a 20-7 loss at Northeastern. Sam Postlethwait was 8 of 13 passing for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the win. The fifth-year senior from Dover, DE found Butter Pressey for scoring strikes of 30 and 51 yards and Brett Veach for an 83-yard score. The pass to Veach was the fourth-longest in school history and the Blue Hens' longest play from scrimmage this year.

"It felt like old times today," said Pressey, who rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown, along with his two touchdown catches totaling 81 yards. "When you can run basic plays and make them work, you can do a lot of things. We are looking to finish strong."

After totaling zero yards rushing on 42 attempts last week, Delaware's ground game returned, too. Along with Pressey's 53 yards on eight carries, Butch Patrick ran seven times for 95 yards, Antawn Jenkins carried 16 times for 54 yards and Postlethwait amassed 31 yards rushing. In all, the Delaware rushing attack totaled 227 yards on 47 carries.

The Wildcats moved the ball most of the day against the Delaware defense. New Hampshire rolled up 567 yards of total offense and 31 first downs. The Blue Hen defense bent, but never broke, making New Hampshire settled for four field goal attempts during a first half that the Wildcats amassed 311 yards of offense. Wildcat kicker Shawn MacLean connected on three of those attempts.

The Blue Hens were led by Darrell Edmonds' 17 tackles. Sidney Haugabrook, who had intercepted four passes in the previous two games, added 15 tackles.

"I didn't know where this game would end up," said Delaware coach Tubby Raymond, who picked up career win No. 298. "Coming into today, we were concerned about our football team. We have sound kids with good character and they responded to our pleading. We grew immeasurably today."

The Blue Hens (2-3, 2-2 Atlantic 10) opened up a 28-16 lead heading into the intermission. New Hampshire (3-2, 1-2) marched down the field, however, on the opening possession of the second half. Quarterback Ryan Day, who ran for 107 yards and two TDs to go along with 36 of 52 passing for 373 yards, capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run to pull the Wildcats to within five, 28-23.

On Delaware's second offensive play of the ensuing possession, however, Postlethwait hooked up with Pressey for a 51-yard touchdown. The score was the 30th touchdown of Pressey's career. The Blue Hens converted the two-point conversion and had a 36-23 lead.

New Hampshire, which suffered its second straight setback after losing to William & Mary last week, pulled back to within seven with 7:10 left when R.J. Lindquist scored on a four-yard run. The PAT kick failed, however, to leave the margin at seven, 36-29.

The Blue Hens struck back again, though. Marching down the field with a 12-play, 74-yard drive, the Blue Hen margin became double-digits again when Jenkins scored on a one-yard plunge. Scott Collins' PAT gave Delaware a 43-29 lead with 2:04 left.

Just 45 seconds later, Delaware put the game away for good. Mike Adams intercepted Day for the second time. Adams immediately lateralled to Ricardo Walker, who raced 56 yards for his second career touchdown. Collins' PAT kick was blocked, snapping a string of 37 straight successful PATs.

New Hampshire tacked on a score in the closing seconds for the final margin. Stephan Lewis scored on a four-yard run with 28 seconds remaning. Lewis, who did have 13 catches for 117 yards receiving, was limited to 54 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

Delaware comes home for its next two games. The Blue Hens play host to Hofstra for homecoming next Saturday at 12:05 p.m. The game will be televised by the Atlantic 10 Network.
