Turnovers and Penalties Haunt Blue Hens in Season-Ending Setback November 17, 2001
VILLANOVA, PA -- Three turnovers inside enemy territory and 15 penalties were the undoing for the University of Delaware football team as the Blue Hens dropped their season finale Saturday with a 19-14 Atlantic 10 Football Conference setback to No. 23 ranked Villanova at Villanova Stadium. Villanova kicker Casey Hannon converted on four field goals, quarterback Brett Gordon connected on 32 of 44 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown, and all-time NCAA I-AA career all-purpose leader Brian Westbrook rushed for 137 yards and caught nine passes for 47 yards as the Wildcats (8-2, 7-1 Atlantic 10) won their fourth straight game. The Wildcats stayed in first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings heading into their final regular season game next Saturday at William & Mary. Delaware, which turned the ball over twice inside the Villanova 15-yard line and committed a season-high 15 penalties for 120 yards, had a two-game win streak snapped and ended the season at 4-6, 4-5 Atlantic 10. The Hens suffered their first losing season overall and in league play since the 1987 season. "This game was kind of a microcosm of the season," said Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond, who was coming off last week's 10-6 win over Richmond which gave him his historic 300th career coaching victory. "So many things that could have been just fell short. Turning the ball over twice inside Villanova's 20-yard line was like cutting your leg off. We were down there, knocking on the door in their territory, but just didn't pull it off. We could have won the ballgame. Outside of our sloppiness, I thought we played a pretty good ballgame." Delaware freshman quarterback Mike Connor hit on 15 of 31 passes for a career-high 205 yards and senior spread end Jamin Elliott caught six passes for 122 yards but it wasn't enough for the Hens. Elliott upped his career totals to 158 receptions for 3,068 yards, moving him into ninth place on the Atlantic 10 career pass receiving yardage list. The Blue Hens jumped out to a 7-0 lead five minutes into the game when senior Butch Patrick scored from three yards out as Delaware took advantage of a Westbrook fumble. Delaware senior defensive end Ron Cook returned the fumble 40 yards to the Villanova 31 to set up the opening score. The Wildcats then took a 13-7 lead into halftime as Hannon nailed a 38-yard field goal four minutes into the second quarter and Villanova scored 10 points in the final minute of the first half to take the lead for good. Gordon hit Brian White on a four-yard scoring toss with 52 seconds left before intermission to cap a 78-yard drive. The touchdown, set up when Jamison Young recovered a Butter Pressey fumble at the VU 22-yard line, was the first touchdown scored against Delaware in 154 minutes of play dating back to the fourth quarter vs. William & Mary Oct. 20. The Hens could not move the ball in their ensuing drive, giving the ball back to the Wildcats. Hannon then closed the half with a 42-yard field goal to up the lead to 13-7. Hannon gave the Wildcats a 16-7 lead with his third field goal of the game with 2:39 left in the third quarter and neither team could score again until the final minutes. The Hens cut the lead to 16-14 with 5:41 left to play when Pressey (64 yards rushing) ran in the end zone from seven yards out to cap a 15-play, 78-yard drive. But the Wildcats came right back as Shaz Brown returned the kickoff 58 yards to the Delaware 27-yard line and Hannon hit his fourth field goal of the day, a 36-yarder, four plays later for a 19-14 lead. Delaware had one last chance to win the game as Pressey runs of 24 and two yards put the ball on the 50-yard line. However, Connor's third down and fourth down passes, the second with 1:31 left to play, both fell incomplete, giving Villanova the win. AGATE: Box Score
