Tribe Rallies to Down Hens; Spoil Gutsy Effort by Freshman QB Connor

NEWARK, DE -- Junior quarterback Dave Corley threw three touchdowns passes, including a 30-yarder to Rich Musinski with 5:40 left to play for the game-winner, as William & Mary upended host University of Delaware 21-17 in an Atlantic 10 Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

The Tribe, which won at Delaware Stadium for the first time since 1990, stayed alive in its hunt for an NCAA I-AA playoff berth as it improved to 4-3 (3-2 Atlantic 10). The Blue Hens lost their second straight game to fall to 2-5, 2-4.

Delaware got a gutsy effort from true freshman quarterback Mike Connor who made his first start for the Blue Hens. The first true freshman to play quarterback at Delaware since 1951, he hit on 13 of 24 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted three times, the last with eight seconds left when Adam Braithwaite picked him off in the end zone with the Blue Hens driving, sealing the win for the Tribe.

"Given the way things have gone for us this season, you have to be pleased with some of the things we did today," said Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond. "It was still a disheartening experience to lose this game. I'm particularly pleased with Mike Connor.I thought he did an excellent job. We are very proud of him. I thought our defense played magnificently. They brought the game to William & Mary. It was a good football game."

Corley connected on 13 of 24 passes for 184 yards with Musinski catching five passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. The William & Mary defense, which held Delaware to just 282 total yards, intercepted three UD passes, recovered a fumble, and sacked Connor seven times. Jason Sisto had a team-high 10 tackles.

Delaware,which failed for the second straight game to give Raymond his 299th career coaching victory, outgained William & Mary 282-221 but was hurt by the four turnovers. The game marked the seventh time in the last 10 meetings between the schools that the outcome was decided by a touchdown or less. Delaware recovered three turnovers and held the nation's No. 8 ranked total offense to just 221 yards, 240 yards under its average.

After each team traded two turnovers in the opening quarter, William & Mary went up 14-0 when Corley hit Musinski on an eight-yard scoring toss with 8:55 left in the second quarter and then connected with Marcus Howard on a nine-yard score through the air with 3:57 left before halftime. Howard's touchdown was set up by an interception by Billy Parker that he returned to the Delaware 46. A 37-yard completion from Corley to Musinski was the key play in the scoring drive.

But Delaware rallied in the second half. Connor connected with Jamin Elliott on a 53-yard touchdown pass with 2:16 left in the third quarter with Elliott faking a defender near the sideline and racing in for the score. The Hens tied the game with 10:59 left to play when Antawn Jenkins (game-high 62 yards rushing) bulled in for a two-yard touchdown run.

The Hens took their first lead of the day with 9:02 left to play when Scott Collins converted on a 40-yard field goal, his first of the season to break a streak of seven straight misses, to give UD a 17-14 lead. That score was set up when Jameer Rasheed recovered a Nick Rogers fumble at the Tribe 16-yard line.

But the Tribe came right back on its next possession to clinch the win, driving 65 yards on six plays with Corley hitting Musinski with the game-winner.

"It's not easy to win here," said William & Mary head coach Jimmye Laycock. "I'm pleased we were able to pull it out. It was a hard-fought game with a lot of momentum swings. Connor was tough. We put some pressure on him and he handled it well. He'll get nothing but better."

"I had a lot of fun out there today," said Connor. "It was unfortunate that we lost, but it was fun. I just wanted to compete. I made a lot of mistakes but I think I improved as the game went along."
