Late Interception
Thwarts Blue Hens Rally

football to return the opening kickoff for a
touchdown.

Billy Parker's 41-yard interception return for a touchdown
thwarted a furious Delaware rally and lifted William &
Mary to a 45-42 Atlantic 10 Football Conference victory at
Zable Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The loss marked the third straight
Atlantic 10 loss dating back to last year. It is the first
time since 1987 that the Blue Hens (2-3, 0-2) have lost
three consecutive conference games.
"When we looked at our schedule and the
first five games, we needed to survive them," said Delaware
coach K.C. Keeler. "We're now 2-3. That's not survival. Our
team is playing hard and with a lot of character, never
giving up. Today we battled back and put ourselves in a
position to win up until we threw that last interception.
We're disappointed because of our three losses. We have been
in a position to win all of those games. But I am happy our
kids are still playing with confidence.
I thought one of the differences today was
the experience that W&M showed. It really is a very good
William & Mary team and David Corley is a great
player."
The Blue Hens got off to a fast start as
Ricardo Walker made history on the opening kickoff.
Walker raced 95 yards for a touchdown, marking the 18th
kickoff return for a touchdown in school history and the
first time in 111 seasons of Delaware football that a Blue
Hen has ever returned the game's opening kickoff for a
score. It also marked the third time in the last five
meetings that Delaware has returned a kickoff for a
touchdown against the Tribe.
William & Mary (2-2, 1-1), ranked No.
17 this week in The Sports Network Top 25, responded with a
fury, however. The Tribe scored the next 20 points,
including 17 in the six minutes that followed Walker's
opening heroics.
David Corley hit Rich Musinski for a
45-yard touchdown pass just 2:31 after Walker's return to
tie the game, 7-7. Musinski, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the
Year two years ago, burned the Blue Hens for the second
straight year. Musinski had nine catches for 194 yards and
two touchdowns on Saturday. Last year, Musinski had five
catches for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Tribe's next possession was set up
when Delaware quarterback Andy Hall threw an
interception on the first play. The interception was Hall's
first as a Blue Hen after 96 attempts. The Delaware defense
held, but Greg Kuehn drilled a career-long 51-yard field
goal to give William & Mary a 10-7 lead.
Another Delaware miscue led to the Tribe
taking a 17-7 lead. Deep in its own end, Delaware botched a
punt snap and gave the Tribe (2-2, 1-1) a first-and-goal at
the Delaware 7. Jonathan Smith broke loose on the first play
to score from seven yards out and give the home team a 17-7
lead with the game just 6:51 old.
After trailing 28-14 at the half, the
Blue Hens ralled to tie the game in the third quarter.
Jesse O'Neill caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Hall
to make it 28-21.
Delaware then tied the game after a
William & Mary miscue. The Tribe fumbled a punt snap and
the Blue Hens took over at the William & Mary 19. Two
plays later, Keith Burnell (19 carries, 79 yards)
barrelled in from a yard out to tie the game.
However, a Kuehn 37-yard field goal and a
51 yard scoring pass from Musinski to Corley gave William
& Mary a 38-28 lead with 5:25 to play. The scoring
strike was the 19th between Corley and Musinski to set a new
school record. On the day, Corley was 23 of 34 for 326 yards
to set a new William & Mary career passing record.
Corley, a Walter Payton Award Candidate, now has 8,256 yards
in his career, passing Stan Yagiello.
Hall, however, marched the Blue Hens back
down the field and scored on a nine-yard scamper to make it
a 38-35 game with 2:44 to play.
After the Delaware defense held Corley
and company in check, Delaware got the ball back with 1:51
left at the Delaware Delaware 29. On the second play,
however, Hall tried to complete a pass to Justin
Long. Long, however, fell down on the play and Parker
was standing right there to take advantage, intercepting the
pass and racing 41 yards for the clincher and giving Tribe
coach Jimmie Laycock his 150th career win.
Delaware scored with one second remaining
when Hall hit David Boler (four catches, 97 yards)
for the final margin of 45-42. Eight of last 11 meetings
between Delaware and William & Mary have been decided by
seven points or less.
Hall finished the day 16 of 37 for a
season-high 256 yards and rushed for 53 yards and one
touchdown on nine carries.
Vince Wilson, who did not start
because of a deep thigh bruise, wound up Delaware's leading
tackler with 11. Mondoe Davis and Nick Fazzie
also had double-digits with 10 tackles apiece.
Delaware will look to rebound when it
returns home to face Northeastern University next Saturday
at 1 p.m.
