Delaware (11-1, 8-1 Atlantic 10) will learn of its first round playoff opponent on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the field of 16 is announced on ESPNews. The Blue Hens will return to the playoffs for the first time since 2000, when they advanced to the semifinals. They will make their 17th appearance in the NCAA playoffs, 12th as a member of Division I-AA. It is the seventh time Delaware has won 11 games in a season and first time Delaware has won 11 games in a regular season.
"When I got here, we talked about winning championships," said Delaware coach K.C. Keeler. "This is our first championship and it is a tremendous honor and very gratifying. This was an unbelievable ball game. To beat a team like Villanova on their home field for a conference title is unbelievable. This was a classic football game."
Although it didn't start like the typical Delaware-Villanova shootout, it sure wound up that way as the teams combined for 24 points in the final 10:55. The defenses kept the opposition out of the end zone for the first 30 minutes as the score was tied, 3-3. Delaware had the ball inside of the Villanova 15 three times in the first half, but missed one field goal and failed to pick up the first down on a fake field goal attempt.
To open the second half, however, Delaware marched down the field to score the game's first touchdown. The Blue Hens marched 65 yards in nearly six minutes, capped by Antawn Jenkins' two-yard touchdown run to give Delaware a 10-3 lead.
Villanova (7-4, 5-4) tied the game with 10:55 to play when it capped a 16-play, 93-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by Terry Butler, the first of two touchdowns by Butler in the fourth quarter.
Delaware regained the lead, 13-10, after a brilliant goal-line stand by Villanova. Delaware had first-and-goal at the 1, but was denied three times and had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Brad Shushman.
Villanova took its first and only lead of the afternoon with 5:51 to play when Butler scored again, this time on a seven-yard scoring run, to give the Wildcats a 17-13 lead.
And so, for the fourth time in seven weeks, Delaware was faced with having to come-from-behind to win. Hall, who left the game for a good portion of the first half because of a partially separated left shoulder, marched the Delaware offense down the field.
The Blue Hens marched 79 yards in 13 plays for the game-winner. Hall completed a pass to David Boler (eight catches, 78 yards) to give Delaware first-and-goal at the one. Again, the Villanova defense stood tall, stuffing Hall on a pair of keepers. However, on third-and-goal, Hall ran to his right on an option play and kept the ball into the end zone for the touchdown to give Delaware a three-point lead. Hall finished 22-of-30 passing for 217 yards and ran 11 times for 35 yards.
"Andy said he wanted to stay out on the field, even though he had the injury," said Keeler. "We got a little conservative with him in the second half. But on that last play, we had to put the ball in his hands and he made a big time play."
On Delaware's final drive, Hall called his own number nine times, going 4-for-4 passing for 38 yards and carrying five times for 16 yards.
Villanova had one last shot. The Wildcats marched to the Delaware 43 with 24 seconds left, however, four straight Joe Casamento passes fell incomplete, the last as Casamento was hit by Chris Mooney and Shawn Johnson, to clinch the Delaware win. Casamento was 20-of-37 for 191 yards and was sacked four times.
Villanova, which had defeated Delaware six of the last seven seasons and beat the Blue Hens on the final day of the regular season last year to earn a playoff spot, holds out slim hopes for an at-large bid into this year's I-AA playoffs. The Wildcats finished the regular season 7-4, including a win over Division I-A Temple. However, they lost three straight and four of their last five games after opening the season 6-0.
Delaware's Germaine Bennett had his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. Bennett, who went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season last week, carried 21 times for 109 yards. Boler also reached a milestone as he surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards in only his second season.
Delaware outgained Villanova, 410-299. The Blue Hens had the ball for 35:14, including nearly 20 of the 30 minutes in the second half. That number was assisted by Delaware converting 10 of 16 third downs.
