Talented defender with outstanding
size and who will once again be a key
member of the Delaware defensive
secondary...smart and versatile performer
who can play free safety, strong safety,
and cornerback...projected as top backup
at free safety behind Dave Camburn and at
strong safety behind Kyle Campbell
entering the season...one of three Georgia
natives in UD secondary along with
starters Kyle Campbell and Sidney
Haugabrook....recorded one tackle in
spring game...
2003:
One of just four true freshmen to see
action, joining defensive back Rashaad
Woodard, linebacker KeiAndre Hepburn, and
defensive tackle Bubba
Jespersen...appeared in 13 games and
started at cornerback in wins over Rhode
Island, Navy, and Maine...sat out contests
vs. West Chester, Hofstra, and William
& Mary while recovering from a bout of
mononucleosis...recorded 16 tackles on the
season, including 11 solo stops, and broke
up one pass...enjoyed best game vs. Maine
when he recorded eight tackles, including
six solo stops, in the overtime
victory...also had three tackles in win
over Navy...

passes in his career...scored five
touchdowns off interceptions and kick
returns as a sophomore...had five
interceptions as a freshman in 1999, six
in 2000, five in 2001, and three in
2002...posted 54 tackles as a junior and
44 as a senior...also ran sprints and
relays in track..turned down several I-A
offers to attend Delaware...

Nicos Diaz Chavis (pronounced "neekos
chay-vus")...son of Diaz and Katherine
Chavis...electrical engineering major at
Delaware...father is a civil
engineer...both parents are graduates of
South Carolina State...father ran track in
college...uncle, Reggie Pleasant, was a
former National Football League
player.
