Team
Date:
November 21, 2004
PHILADELPHIA
-- The University of Delaware football
team, which earned a share of its second
straight Atlantic 10 Conference title and
earned a berth in this week's NCAA I-AA
Tournament, placed seven players on the
All-Atlantic 10 Conference all-star teams
announced Tuesday.
A total of
84 players were honored among three teams
with selections being made by the 12
league coaches. New Hampshire and James
Madison, both NCAA I-AA tournament
qualifiers, each placed 10 players on the
all-star teams while league tri-champion
and No. 3 national seed William & Mary
placed nine players on the squad. Each
team had at least one player honored.
Delaware
senior Sidney Haugabrook
(Woodward/Atlanta, GA - at right) was the
first-ever triple award winner in A-10
history, being named first team kickoff
returner, first team punt returner, and
first team defensive back. He earned
All-Atlantic 10 honors for the fourth
straight year, joining former defensive
end Mike Cecere (1997-2000) as the only
two players in UD history to accomplish
the feat.
In
addition to Haugabrook, defensive tackles
Chris Mooney (Huntington/Huntington, NY)
and junior Tom Parks (North
Allegheny/Pittsburgh, PA) each earned
first team honors, senior middle
linebacker Mondoe Davis (Woodside/Newport
News, VA) earned first team honors, senior
offensive tackle Trip DelCampo (Cape
Henlopen/Rehoboth Beach, DE) garnered
first team honors, and junior wide
receiver David Boler (Charter Oak/Covina,
CA) was a third team All-Atlantic 10
selection.
Mooney,
who is also on the national CoSIDA
Academic All-American ballot, had earned
second team honors each of the last two
seasons, Davis was a second team selection
in 2003, and DelCampo was a third team
selection last fall. Boler and Parks were
honored for the first time in their
careers.
William
& Mary quarterback Lang Campbell, who
threw for 3,037 yards and 21 touchdowns
with just one interception, was named the
Offensive Player of the Year;
Massachusetts defensive back Shannon James
was named Defensive Player of the Week,
William & Mary kicker Greg Kuehn was
named Special Teams Player of the Year;
and James Madison defensive back Tony
LeZotte and quarterback Ricky Santos
shared the league Rookie of the Year
Award. New Hampshire head coach Sean
McDonnell was named Coach of the Year.
The 10th
ranked Blue Hens (8-3) will host No. 25
Lafayette in the first round of the NCAA
I-AA Tournament Saturday, Nov. 27 at
Delaware Stadium. Should they win that
game, they would move on to play the
Hampton vs. William & Mary winner Nov.
4.
Haugabrook,
an All-American candidate and a candidate
for the Buck Buchanan Award until mid-way
through the year, proved to be one of the
most versatile performers ever to play at
Delaware. He led the Atlantic 10 in punt
returns and averaged 12.1 yards per
return, including two touchdowns, and
ranked No. 1 in kickoff returns (28.1 avg)
for a 26.5-yard average, including one
touchdown. Defensively, he posted 50
tackles this season (all unassisted),
intercepted two passes, broke up four
passes, and recovered a fumble.
Parks and
Mooney led one of the top defensive line
units in the conference as the Hens ranked
second in the Atlantic 10 in total defense
(300.0), passing defense (186.5), scoring
defense (22.0), and passing efficiency
defense (118.1) and ranked third in
rushing defense (113.4). Parks leads the
Atlantic 10 with 10 sacks for 56 yards and
has 15 overall tackles for loss of 65
yards. He has 42 total tackles, including
27 solo stops. He posted two sacks in a
game three times this season.
Mooney,
who earned second team honors each of the
last three seasons and was listed on some
pre-season All-American teams, ranked
second on the team with 6.5 sacks for 54
yards to go with 10 tackles for losses of
64 yards. He also broke up three passes
and recovered two fumbles. He is
Delaware's active career leader with 16
sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss.
Davis, who
leads the Delaware defense from his middle
linebacker spot, was the Blue Hens'
leading tackler with 98 stops, including
60 solo stops. He also has 5.5 tackles for
loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and
four pass breakups. He ranks 12th in the
Atlantic 10 with 8.9 stops per game. He
posted 10 or more tackles five times,
including highs of 13 each vs. Towson and
Massachusetts.
DelCampo,
a 6-5, 300-pounder, led an offense line
that paved the way for a Blue Hen attack
that averaged 155.1 yards rushing, 25.3
points, and 369.5 total yards per game. In
addition, the Hens allowed just 15 sacks
all season to rank third in the Atlantic
10.
Boler has
caught 53 passes for 729 yards and one
touchdown this season and leads the Blue
Hens with an average 13.8 yards per catch,
including a season-long 62-yarder. He tied
a school record with 16 receptions vs.
Navy earlier this season and surpassed the
100-yard mark for receiving four times in
the final five games. He had 153 receiving
yards vs. Navy and caught seven passes for
a career-high 155 yards vs. William &
Mary and 10 receptions for 144 yards vs.
James Madison. He ranks sixth in the
Atlantic 10 and 23rd in the nation in
receptions (5.9) and is seventh in the
league and 29th in the NCAA in receiving
yards per game (81.0).
