NEW YORK
-- University of Delaware senior
cornerback Sidney Haugabrook and junior
defensive tackle Tom Parks (right) have
been selected to the Associated Press NCAA
I-AA All-American football squad announced
Wednesday.
Haugabrook,
a senior from Atlanta, GA (Woodward
Academy), earned second team honors while
Parks, a junior from Pittsburgh, PA (North
Allegheny HS), was a third team selection.
The three teams were selected by a panel
of Associated Press writers.
Haugabrook
earned his third All-American notice of
the year after earning first team honors
by the Walter Camp Foundation as a
defensive back and second team honors by
The Sports Network as a return specialist.
Parks previously earned third team
All-American honors by The Sports Network.
Parks and
Haugabrook led the Blue Hens to a 9-4
mark, a share of the Atlantic 10 title,
and a berth in the I-AA quarterfinals
before falling to William & Mary 44-38
in double overtime. Delaware's defense was
one of the top units in NCAA I-AA ranking
in the top 25 in both total defense and
rushing defense.
Just the
second player in UD history to earn
all-conference honors all four years,
Haugabrook posted 67 tackles on the
season, including 65 solo stops, and added
2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions,
seven pass breakups, two fumble
recoveries, and two forced fumbles. Also
one of the nation's most feared kick
returners, he averaged 11.4 yards on 27
punt returns, returning two for
touchdowns, and averaged 27.0 yards on 27
kickoff returns, including one touchdown.
He is the first Blue Hen cornerback to
earn All-American honors since Ken Lucas
earned third team Associated Press honors
in 1986 and the first to earn first team
honors since George Schmitt was honored by
the Associated Press in 1982.
For his
career, Haugabrook set seven school
records, establishing school standards for
career starts (51), consecutive starts
(51), tackles by a cornerback (303), punt
returns yards in a career (937), punt
returns for a touchdown in a season (2)
and career (3), and kickoff returns yards
in a season (728). He also recorded 12
career interceptions and 26 pass breakups.
Parks, a
two-year starter, emerged as a dominant
defender in 2004 when he earned first team
All-Atlantic 10 honors. He led all
Delaware defensive linemen with 48
tackles, including 29 solo stops, and led
the league and ranked 15th in I-AA in
sacks with 10 for 56 yards. He also ranked
fifth in the league with 15.5 tackles for
loss (65 yards) and added two pass
breakups. He posted two sacks in a game
three times and two or more tackles for a
loss in a game five times.
An honor
student in accounting, he was an ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American
nominee this season. Parks is the first
Delaware defensive tackle to earn
All-American honors since Joe McGrail
earned Associated Press honorable mention
honors in 1986.
Parks and
Haugabrook were among 15 Atlantic 10
Conference players honored on the three
teams, joining first team quarterback Lang
Campbell (William & Mary), first team
offensive lineman Matt Magerko (James
Madison), first team linebacker Liam
Ezekiel (Northeastern), first team
defensive back Shannon James
(Massachusetts), second team wide
receivers David Ball (New Hampshire) and
Dominique Thompson (William & Mary),
second team offensive lineman Adam Bourget
(Northeastern), second team linebacker
Gian Villante (Hofstra), second team
defensive back Tony LeZotte (James
Madison), third team offensive lineman
Dustin Bayer (Rhode Island), third team
kicker Greg Kuehn (William & Mary),
and third team defensive linemen Jamil
Butler (Villanova) and Adam O'Connor
(William & Mary).
