Mooney, Moore Named to CoSIDA District 2
All-Academic Team

NJ -- A trio of University of Delaware
defensive players have been selected to
the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA) District 2
All-Academic first team announced
Wednesday.
Defensive
linemen Ben Cross (right) and Chris Mooney
and linebacker Mark Moore were all
selected from a vote of District 2 member
sports information directors. District 2
includes all NCAA I-A and I-AA schools in
Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West
Virginia. To be eligible for the team,
student-athletes must be at least a
sophomore, have a 3.2 or better cumulative
grade point index, and be a starter or key
reserve.
All three
Blue Hen players were repeat selections on
the All-District team. Cross, who earned
second team Academic All-American honors
last season, earned first team
All-District 2 honors for the third
straight year. Mooney was a second team
All-District selection each of the past
two seasons and Moore earned second team
honors last year as well.
The trio
has led a Delaware defense that ranks
among the best both in the Atlantic 10
Conference and in the NCAA. Entering this
week's game vs. Villanova, Delaware ranks
No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 in total defense
(283.3 yards allowed per game - No. 5 in
NCAA I-AA), No. 2 in pass defense (171.5
yards allowed per game - No. 25 in NCAA),
No. 2 in scoring defense (20.7 - No 36 in
NCAA), No. 3 in rushing defense (112.3),
and No. 3 in passing efficiency defense
(117.8).
Cross, a
defensive lineman from Hamilton, VA
(Loudoun Valley HS), has appeared in all
11 games this season with two starts and
has registered 18 tackles this season,
including 13 solo stops. He has posted 5.5
tackles for losses of 22 yards and has one
sack and one fumble recovery. He has
played in 45 career games and posted eight
tackles for loss. A three-time member of
the Atlantic 10 Academic Honor Roll and
the 2004 Atlantic 10 Scholar-Athlete of
the Year, is a civil engineering major
with a 3.947 grade point index.
Mooney, a
defensive lineman from Huntington, NY
(Huntington HS), ranks among the top
defensive linemen in the Atlantic 10 and
has started all 11 games this season and
35 for his career. He ranks ninth on the
team this year with 33 tackles, including
17 solo stops, and has posted eight
tackles for losses of 42 yards and 4.5
sacks for 32 yards. He also has three pass
breakups and has recovered two fumbles. He
posted a career-high 12 tackles vs. Navy
earlier this season and has 14 career
sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss. A
three-time member of the Atlantic 10
Academic Honor Roll, he is a two-time
All-Atlantic 10 selection and carries a
3.509 gpa as an accounting major.
Moore, a
linebacker from Lewes, DE (Cape Henlopen
HS), carries a 3.344 gpa as a biological
sciences education major. He has started
all 11 games this season and has started
30 of his 48 career games. This season he
ranks sixth on the squad in tackles with
48, including 27 solo stops. He also has
three tackles for loss and one fumble
recovery. He posted a career-high 12
tackles earlier this season and has posted
173 career tackles and four sacks.
The Blue
Hens, ranked No. 11 in the latest Sports
Network I-AA Top 25 poll, will take an 7-3
record into their final regular season
game this Saturday, Nov. 20 vs. Villanova
at Delaware Stadium.
As first
team selections, all 22 players will be
placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA
Academic All-American team which will be
announced in late November. Delaware,
Pittsburgh, and Penn State each placed
three members on the first team while
Lafayette, Maryland, Bucknell, and Robert
Morris each placed two players on the
squad.
