Date: December 20, 2004

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware football team was picked among the final top 10 in both major Top 25 polls that were announced Monday afternoon by The Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today.

Delaware was picked No. 7 in the final The Sports Network Top 25 poll of sports information directors and media members and was the No. 8 pick in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll which was selected from a vote of sports information directors and head coaches.

The Blue Hens posted a 9-3 record, earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference title, and advanced to the NCAA I-AA tournament quarterfinals this past season after capturing the NCAA I-AA national title with a 15-1 mark in 2003 for head coach K.C. Keeler.

Delaware, which was the pre-season No. 1 selection in both polls, was ranked among the top 10 in both polls for the first nine weeks of the season before falling to No. 11 for the final two regular season polls.

The Blue Hens, who finished No. 1 in last year's final polls, have now been selected among the final top 10 eight times since 1991.

NCAA I-AA national champion James Madison, which defeated Delaware 20-13 during the regular season and downed Montana in the national title game, was the consensus No. 1 pick in both polls, earning 67 first place votes in The Sports Network poll and 31 first place votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

Both polls were identical in the first top six spots with James Madison being followed by Montana, William & Mary, Sam Houston State, Furman, and New Hampshire. Delaware was seventh in The Sports Network poll followed by Eastern Washington, Southern Illinois, and Georgia Southern in the top 10. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, Eastern Washington was No. 7 followed by Delaware, Southern Illinois, and Georgia Southern.
