Football Coaches Association All-American

-- University of Delaware senior
cornerback Sidney Haugabrook earned his
fourth All-American notice of the
post-season Thursday as the Blue Hen
co-captain was selected to the American
Football Coaches Association first
team.
Haugabrook,
a 5-10, 185 lb. consumer economics major
from Atlanta, GA (Woodward Academy), was
previously named a first team All-American
defensive back by the Walter Camp
Foundation, a second team All-American
defensive back by the Associated Press,
and was a second team All-American return
specialist by The Sports Network. He is
one of three 2004 All-Americans for the
Blue Hens, who also placed defensive
tackle Tom Parks on the Associated Press
third team and The Sports Network third
team and defensive end Chris Mooney, who
earned a spot on The Sports Network third
team.
Haugabrook
was one of 25 players honored in voting
conducted by NCAA I-AA head coaches. He
was one of two Atlantic 10 players honored
on the team - joining William & Mary
quarterback Lang Campbell. He is the first
Blue Hen cornerback to earn All-American
honors since Ken Lucas earned third team
Associated Press honors in 1986 and the
first to earn first team honors since
George Schmitt was honored by the
Associated Press in 1982.
Just the
second player in UD history to earn
all-conference honors all four years when
he was a first team All-Atlantic 10
Conference selection, Haugabrook capped an
outstanding season in 2004 as he led the
Blue Hens to a 9-4 mark, a share of the
Atlantic 10 title, and a berth in the I-AA
quarterfinals before falling to William
& Mary 44-38 in double
overtime.
He posted
67 tackles on the season, including 65
solo stops, and added 2.5 tackles for
loss, two interceptions, seven pass
breakups, two fumble recoveries, and two
forced fumbles. Also one of the nation's
most feared kick returners, he averaged
11.4 yards on 27 punt returns, returning
two for touchdowns, and averaged 27.0
yards on 27 kickoff returns, including one
touchdown.
For his
career, Haugabrook set seven school
records, establishing school standards for
career starts (51), consecutive starts
(51), tackles by a cornerback (303), punt
returns yards in a career (937), punt
returns for a touchdown in a season (2)
and career (3), and kickoff returns yards
in a season (728). He also recorded 12
career interceptions and 26 pass breakups.
