PHILADELPHIA
-- University of Delaware senior
cornerback Sidney Haugabrook has been
honored by the Atlantic 10 Football
Conference as the Special Teams Player of
the Week for his play in Saturday's 21-17
conference win over Towson
University.
Haugabrook,
a senior from Atlanta, GA (Woodward
Academy), was one of four players honored
by the league. New Hampshire redshirt
freshman quarterback Ricky Santos, who led
the Wildcats to a 35-24 upset win over I-A
Rutgers, was named the Player of the Week
and Rookie of the Week while junior
cornerback Allante Harrison of Towson, who
had three interceptions vs. Delaware, was
named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Haugabrook,
who earned the award for the second time
in his career, sparked the Blue Hens to a
21-17 win over Towson Saturday as he
returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown
to tie the score at 7-7 midway through the
third quarter. Haugabrook, who also
returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown
in last year's win over Maine, has now
scored four career touchdowns of punt and
interception returns.
He also
returned two kickoffs for 54 yards vs.
Towson and now is averaging 47.7 yards per
punt return (second in I-AA) and 24.2
yards per kickoff return this
season.
In
addition to his returns, Haugabrook also
recorded four tackles and broke up a pass.
He raised his career tackle total to 248,
breaking the all-time Delaware record for
most tackles by a cornerback held by
former NFL player Tim Jacobs, who had 246
in 1989-92. Haugabrook, a pre-season
All-American and candidate for the Buck
Buchanan I-AA Defensive Player of the Year
Award, also started his 40th straight game
vs. Towson.
Delaware
(1-1, 1-0 Atlantic 10), which moved up one
spot to No. 6 in this week's The Sports
Network Top 25 poll, will host local rival
West Chester University Saturday at 7 p.m.
at Delaware Stadium.
