SAN
FRANCISCO -- University of Delaware senior
cornerback Sidney Haugabrook, a four-time
All-Atlantic 10 selection and a consensus
All-American in 2004, has been invited to
play in the 80th annual East-West Shrine
All-Star Football Game on Saturday, Jan.
15 at SBCPark at 11 a.m.
The game,
one of the most prestigious post-season
all-star games in college football,
features some of the top senior football
players in the nation at all levels. Since
its inception in 1925, the game has
benefitted Shriner's Hospitals for
Children and raised money to help make the
public aware of the expert orthopedic and
burn care available at no charge. The game
has raised more than $14 million.
Haugabrook,
a native of Atlanta, GA (Woodward
Academy), becomes the first Delaware
player to take part in the East-West game
and the first to take part in a college
post-season all-star game since offensive
tackle Jim Stull played in the 1999
Blue-Gray All-Star game.
Haugabrook,
who will play for the East team coached by
Purdue head coach Joe Tiller and his
staff, is one of 10 NCAA I-AA players
selected to the game - joining Lehigh
tight end Adam Bergen (East), Harvard
quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (East),
Illinois State linebacker Boomer Grigsby
(East), Northeastern linebacker Liam
Ezekiel (East), Southern Illinois running
back Brandon Jacobs (East), Sacramento
State wide receiver Fred Amey (West), Cal
Poly linebacker Jordan Beck (West), UC
Davis offensive lineman Marc Manfredda
(West), and Eastern Washington offensive
lineman Michael Roos (West). Oregon State
head coach Mike Riley will lead the West
team.
Among
Haugabrook's East teammates are Navy
fullback Kyle Eckel, early Heisman Trophy
candidate quarterback Kyle Orton from
Purdue, and All-American wide receiver
Tyler Stubblefield from Purdue.
Highlighting the West team is all-time
leading NCAA Division I passer Timmy Chang
of Hawaii and California standout running
back J.J. Arrington.
Just the
second four-time All-Atlantic 10 selection
in UD history, the 5-10, 185 lb.
Haugabrook also was named first team
American Football Coaches Association
All-American, first team Walter Camp
Foundation All-American, second team
Associated Press All-American, and second
team The Sports Network All-American
within the last month.
He posted
67 tackles on the season, including 65
solo stops, and added 2.5 tackles for
loss, two interceptions, seven pass
breakups, two fumble recoveries, and two
forced fumbles this season in leading
Delaware to a 9-4 record, a share of the
Atlantic 10 Conference title, and a berth
in the NCAA I-AA playoff quarterfinals for
head coach K.C. Keeler.
Also one
of the nation's most feared kick
returners, he averaged 11.4 yards on 27
punt returns, returning two for
touchdowns, and averaged 27.0 yards on 27
kickoff returns, including one
touchdown.
For his
career, Haugabrook set seven school
records, establishing school standards for
career starts (51), consecutive starts
(51), tackles by a cornerback (303), punt
returns yards in a career (937), punt
returns for a touchdown in a season (2)
