11 Blue Hens Take Advantage of Turnovers
to Post 23-14 Atlantic 10 Win over

VA (November 13, 2004) -- The University
of Delaware jumped out to a 20-0 halftime
lead and took advantage of four Richmond
turnovers and a school -record tying three
field goals by senior Brad Shushman to
hold on for a 23-14 Atlantic 10 Football
Conference victory Saturday afternoon at
Richmond Stadium.
The
11th ranked Blue Hens (7-3, 6-1 Atlantic
10), stinging from back-to-back losses to
Navy and James Madison the previous two
weeks, recovered four fumbles, held
Richmond to just 288 total yards, and held
a 21-minute advantage in time of
possession to stay in contention for a
share of the Atlantic 10 title and a berth
in the NCAA I-AA tournament.
Richmond,
which snapped a five-game losing streak
with a 24-0 win over Towson last week,
played its final home game of the season
and fell to 3-7, 2-5 Atlantic 10. Delaware
has now downed Richmond five times in the
last six meetings and 10 times in the last
11 matchups.
The
turnovers were the story as the Spider
coughed the ball up three times in the
first half, leading to 10 Delaware points
as the Blue Hens took a 20-0 lead into
intermission. Richmond took advantage of a
sluggish Delaware offense and favorable
wind conditions in the second half to
close the gap to 20-14, but Shushman
connected on his third field goal of the
day with 10:07 left to up the Hens' lead
to 23-14 and Tom Parks blocked a 39-yard
field goal attempt by Richmond's Carter
Ball with 6:29 left to preserve the win.
As
they did most of the day, the Hens then
ran out the clock with a strong running
game, burning the final 6:29 of the game
as freshman Omar Cuff carried 11 times for
42 yards to finish off the Spiders. Cuff,
a true freshman who began the year as a
defensive back and didn't play at all
until the sixth game of the season,
continued is impressive ascent as he
carried 34 times for a game-high 115
yards.
Last
week, in a 20-13 setback to James Madison,
Cuff made his first career start and set
UD freshman records with 34 carries for
162 yards. As a team, Delaware picked up
214 yards on the ground, converted 13 of
23 third downs, and held to the ball for
41:02 to the Spiders' 18:58.
"We
played a dynamic first half, ran the ball
well, and really went out there and caused
some turnovers," said Delaware head coach
K.C. Keeler, whose team can wrap up a
share of its second straight Atlantic 10
title and eighth overall with a win at
home over Villanova in the regular season
finale next Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
"We talked a lot this week about getting
some turnovers and the defense did a great
job of stripping the ball. The numbers say
that you win 75 percent of the time when
you win the turnover battle. That was the
key today."
Delaware,
which is now plus six in turnovers this
season, has now won 17 straight games and
when committing less turnovers than its
opponents and is 81-15 (84.4 percent) over
the last 10 seasons.
Delaware,
James Madison, and William & Mary all
stand at 6-1 in league play this season.
If all three should win next week, they
would share the Atlantic 10 title but
William & Mary would get the automatic
NCAA I-AA berth due to the conference
tie-breaker system. The defending NCAA
I-AA champion Blue Hens would then be
seeking their ninth tournament appearance
since 1991 as an at-large qualifier.
The
Blue Hens opened the scoring on their
first possession of the day as they got
the ball at the 10-yard line and proceeded
to drive 90 yards on 19 plays in nine
minutes and 20 seconds, going up 7-0 on a
one-yard burst by Cuff. Delaware ran the
ball 16 times during the drive with Cuff
carried 10 times for 37 yards during that
span. The 19 plays and 9:20 time of
possession made it the longest drive of
the season.
It
didn't take long for the Hens to extend
the lead to 14-0 as Richmond running back
Tim Hightower fumbled the ball on the
second play of the next possession and
Kyle Campbell (above at right)
recovered at the 48-yard line.
Twelve plays later, Delaware quarterback
Sonny Riccio found Joe Bleymaier in the
back of the end zone and rifled a 12-yard
scoring pass with 10:41 left in the first
half. Riccio, who has thrown at least one
touchdown pass in all 10 games this
season, finished the day hitting on 15 of
25 passes for 153 yards with Bleymaier
grabbing a career-high six catches for 77
yards.
The
Hens went into intermission up by 20 as
Shushman converted two field goals in the
final two minutes. His 25-yarder with 1:46
left was set up when Sidney Haugabrook
recovered a fumble by David Freeman at the
Richmond 24-yard line. Richmond failed to
move the ball in its next possession and
an 11-yard punt by Chris Radford gave the
Hens the ball at the 39-yard line. Four
plays later Shushman converted a 42-yard
field goal on the final play of the half
as the ball hit the crossbar and rolled
over.
Richmond
failed to give in during the second half,
rallying to make things interesting. The
Spiders scored on their first possession
of the second half when Ryan Mace returned
a punt 40 yards to the Delaware 11-yard
line, and on the first play from
scrimmage, Freeman (97 yards) went around
right end for 11 yards to cut the lead to
20-7 just 1:40 into the second half.
Delaware
was forced to punt three times and
Shushman missed on a 32-yard field goal
attempt in the Hens' next four
possessions, allowing Richmond to cut the
lead to 20-14 when Freeman took a screen
pass from Stacy Tutt and rambled 25 yards
untouched on the second play of the final
stanza.
But
the Spiders never got closer as Shushman
came back to nail his third field goal of
the day, a 27-yarder with 10:07 left to up
the lead to 23-14, and Parks knocked down
Ball's 39-yard attempt just under four
minutes later.
