PHILADELPHIA
- University of Delaware senior kick
returner Sidney Haugabrook, senior
defensive end Chris Mooney (right), and
junior defensive tackle Tom Parks have
been named to 2004 The Sports Network I-AA
Football All-American team.
Haugabrook,
a 5-10 185 lb. senior from Atlanta, GA
(Woodward Academy), earned second team
honors as a return specialist while
Mooney, a 6-5, 270 lb. senior from
Huntington, NY (Huntington HS) and Parks,
a 6-4, 260 lb. junior from Pittsburgh, PA
(North Allegheny HS), earned spots on the
third team.
Haugabrook
earned his second All-American honor of
the month as he was named first team
All-American by the Walter Camp Football
Foundation as a cornerback on Friday. The
American Football Coaches Association and
Associated Press plan to announce their
All-American teams later this
week.
The three
Blue Hen standouts were among 17 Atlantic
10 Conference players selected to the
three teams - the most of any NCAA I-AA
conference - from a vote of over 100 I-AA
member sports information directors and
media members from throughout the country.
Delaware and William & Mary each had
three players selected to the three teams
while New Hampshire and James Madison each
had two. All three teams shared the
Atlantic 10 Conference title and advanced
to the NCAA I-AA tournament.
Delaware
(9-3) fell to William & Mary in the
NCAA quarterfinals while James Madison
defeated William & Mary in the
semifinals to advance to this Friday's
I-AA title game vs. Montana in
Chattanooga, TN.
Haugabrook,
who earned first team All-Atlantic 10
honors as a cornerback, kick returner, and
punt returner, was one of the most
dangerous special teams players in the
country during the 2004 season. He
averaged 11.4 yards on 27 punt returns,
returning two for touchdowns vs. Maine and
Navy, and averaged 27.0 yards on 27
kickoff returns, including a touchdown vs.
Villanova. He ranked third in the Atlantic
10 and 10th in I-AA in kickoff returns and
second in the Atlantic 10 and 18th in I-AA
for punt returns. In addition to his
returns, he started all 13 games at
cornerback and posted 67 tackles, 2.4
tackles for loss, intercepted two passes,
forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles,
and broke up seven passes.
Just the
second player in school history to earn
all-conference honors all four seasons, he
set seven school records, establishing
school standards for career starts (51),
consecutive starts (51), tackles by a
cornerback (303), punt returns yards in a
career (937), punt returns for a touchdown
in a season (2) and career (3), and
kickoff returns yards in a season (728).
Mooney, a
three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection on
the defensive line, enjoyed an outstanding
2004 campaign as one of the top defensive
linemen in the Atlantic 10. A three-year
starter, Mooney earned first team
All-Atlantic 10 honors this season after
recording 42 tackles, including 26 solo
stops, 11 tackles for loss (67 yards), 6.5
sacks (54 yards), three pass breakups, and
two fumble recoveries. Also an honor
student in accounting and a second team
ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic
All-American, Mooney posted career totals
of 16 sacks and 31.5 tackles for loss. He
helped lead a defense that ranked 21st in
I-AA in rushing defense (115.4 yards per
game) and 23rd in total defense (315.8)
during the 2004 campaign.
Parks, a
two-year starter, emerged as a dominant
defender in 2004 when he earned first team
All-Atlantic 10 honors. He led all
Delaware defensive linemen with 48
tackles, including 29 solo stops, and led
the league and ranked 15th in I-AA in
sacks with 10 for 56 yards. He also ranked
fifth in the league with 15.5 tackles for
loss (65 yards) and added two pass
breakups. He posted two sacks in a game
three times and two or more tackles for a
loss in a game five times. An honor
student in accounting, he was an ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American
nominee.
